With the beginning of a new school year, the European Statistics Competition is just around the corner. This competition allows the teams of secondary school students to tackle statistical challenges, search for data, and produce statistical analyses, all while engaging in a friendly competition.

With a mission to foster statistical literacy among students and inspire teachers to integrate official statistics into their work, Eurostat and dedicated National Statistical Institutes are ready to get the seventh edition of the competition going.

Sixth edition highlights

In the last year's competition, which took place during the 2022/2023 school year, over 19 000 students from 19 countries participated. Contestants who qualified for the European phase of the competition used official statistics to explore the topic of well-being in their countries. Exciting videos were produced by student teams from all around Europe, with special recognition going to the Slovenian (16-18 years old) and Greek (14-16 years old) winning teams.

So, how does it work?

National phase

Registration for the national phase typically follows the school year. National Statistical Institutes organise the national part of the competition either in the fall or winter of the ongoing school year. The timeline may differ from country to country, so make sure to follow your Institute’s website for more information.

European phase

Step 1: Each country proposes up to two teams in each age group based on the results of the national competition.

Step 2: Participating teams prepare a video in which they explore a selected topic using statistical analysis.

Step 3: Their work is assessed by a jury, and a winner is declared in both age groups. Each team member is awarded gifts and a trophy!
