Take part in the European Statistics Competition 2025

As the school year unfolds, we're excited to launch the eighth edition of the European Statistics Competition which promotes statistical literacy among students and encourages the use of official statistics in schools. 

This competition offers teams of secondary school students the chance to tackle statistical challenges and showcase their findings by creating fun and engaging videos.

Highlights from the previous edition

In last year’s competition, held during the 2023/2024 school year, over 22 000 students from 20 countries participated. Those who advanced to the European stage of the contest used official statistics to investigate whether the common phrase ‘Everything was better before’ holds true. Teams from across Europe produced brilliant videos, with the Lithuanian (16-18 years old) and Greek (14-16 years old) taking the winning trophies.

How does it work?

National phase

Each national statistical institute organises a statistical competition in their country, either in the fall or winter. Registration generally opens at the start of autumn and all national competitions will be finalised by early May 2025. The timeline varies by country, so check your institute’s website for specific dates and details.

European phase

Each country nominates up to 2 teams in 2 age groups (14-16 and 16-18 years old) for the European phase of the competition based on the results of the national competition.

Participating teams create a video exploring a specific topic using official statistics (topic will be published in December).

Following evaluation of the videos by an international jury, winners will be announced in each age category. Prizes include gift cards and a trophy! And the winning teams get to travel to the award ceremony at the end of June.
