Key figures on the EU in the world – 2025 edition

Today, Eurostat released the 2025 edition of Key figures on the EU in the world. By combining Eurostat data with other, international sources, this publication offers a comprehensive statistical portrait of the EU’s role on the world stage.
Did you know that with 448 million inhabitants, the EU made up 5.5% of the global population in 2023? Or that the EU accounted for 14.7% of global GDP, ranking third after China and the United States? Would you have guessed that the EU accounted for a 6.7% share of the 2022 world’s greenhouse gas emissions?
This publication is structured into 3 chapters: people and society, economy and trade, and environment and natural resources, each comparing EU data with other parts of the world. The first chapter covers topics such as population characteristics, health, education, labour market, living conditions and the digital society. The next chapter moves to the structure of the economy and economic indicators, and it finishes with international trade, tourism, and research and development. The last chapter focuses on transport, energy, environment and natural resources.
By combining intuitive visualisations and concise text, it makes complex data easily accessible to a wide audience.
