In 2023, the EU produced 1 496 billion litres of sparkling wine of fresh grapes. Compared with 2022, this represented an 8% decrease from around 1 624 billion.

The top producing countries in 2023 were Italy, France and Germany, with 638, 312 (224 million litres of champagne and 88 million litres of sparkling wine) and 263 million litres, respectively. These were followed by Spain (206 million litres) and Portugal (25 million litres).

600 million litres of sparkling wine exported in 2023

In the same year the EU exported 600 million litres of sparkling wine to non-EU countries, marking a decrease of 8% compared with the 649 million litres exported in 2022. Despite the decline in 2023, export levels remained higher than those seen in previous years: 498 million litres in 2018, 528 million in 2019 and 495 million in 2020. 

In 2023, the largest categories of sparkling wine exported were prosecco (44%, 266 million litres), sparkling wine from fresh grapes (17%, 100 million), champagne (15%, 91 million), cava (10%, 60 million) and other sparkling wine of fresh grapes with a protected designation of origin (PDO) (6%, 33 million). 

Meanwhile, EU countries imported 5 million litres of sparkling wine from non-EU countries, which corresponded to less than 1% of the amount exported.

  • PDO - Protected designation of origin designates the name of a product which must be produced within a determined geographical area using recognised and recorded know-how. All products with PDO status must be produced exclusively with grapes from the area in question.
  • PGI - Protected geographical indication designates a product with a quality, reputation or other specific features that can be attributed to a determined geographical area. All products with PGI status must be produced with at least 85 % of the grapes coming from the area in question.
