In 2023, the EU exported €1.03 billion worth of bicycles (both electric and non-electric), marking a 10% decrease compared with 2022. The value of imports stood at €1.98 billion, a 21% decline compared with 2022.

A further look into the 2023 data shows that the EU exported 293 thousand electric bicycles (-21% compared with 2022) and imported 867 thousand electric bicycles (-27%). At the same time, the EU exported 852 thousand non-electric bicycles (-17% compared with 2022) and imported 3.5 million (-34%).

Switzerland and the UK leading destinations for exports

In 2023, Switzerland was the main destination for EU exports of non-electric bicycles (30% of all exports to the countries outside of the EU, measured in value), followed by the United Kingdom (20%), and the United States (6%). 

Switzerland and the UK were also the main destinations for exports of electric bicycles (46% and 26% of total extra-EU electric bicycle exports, respectively), followed by the United States (10%) and Norway (9%).

Most imports from Taiwan and Cambodia

In 2023, EU imports of non-electric bicycles came mainly from Taiwan (32% of all imports from the extra-EU countries, measured in value), Cambodia (28%), China and Bangladesh (both 8%).
Most imports of electric bicycles into the EU were from Taiwan (59% of total all extra-EU imports), followed by Vietnam (16%), Switzerland (11%) and China (6%).
