In 2021 in the EU, 80% of the persons residing in private households aged 15-74 years were native-born with two native-born parents; 13% were foreign-born; 4% were native-born with one foreign-born parent; and 3% were native-born with two foreign-born parents.
This information comes from a series of Statistics Explained articles on foreign-born people and their descendants published by Eurostat today. In terms of educational attainment, foreign-born persons living in the EU in 2021 were more likely to have, at most, lower secondary educational attainment (36%) than native-born persons. The highest share of those who had attained tertiary education was observed for native-born persons with one foreign-born parent (34%).
Concerning participation in the labour market, the employment rate in the EU in 2021 for native-born persons with only one foreign-born parent was 75%; this rate was lower for native-born persons with two foreign-born parents (72%) and foreign-born persons (67%). For native-born persons with two native-born parents, the employment rate was 74%.
The unemployment rate in 2021 for native-born persons with two native-born parents was 6%; this rate was higher for native-born persons with only one foreign-born parent (7%), native-born persons with two foreign-born parents (8%) and foreign-born persons (12%).
Regarding employment conditions, across the EU, the highest share of employed persons working part-time in 2021 was observed for native-born persons with two foreign-born parents (23%). Foreign-born persons had the highest share of employees with a contract of limited duration (19%) and the highest share of employed persons with an elementary occupation (also 19%). The highest share of self-employed was observed for native-born persons with two native-born parents (14%).
