Back Sweden and France spend the most on health

Logo Statistics ExplainedHealth expenditure compared to GDP was highest among the EU member states in Sweden, France, Germany and the Netherlands (all around 11% of GDP) in 2014.

In the vast majority of EU Member states, more than half of current healthcare expenditure was spent on curative and rehabilitative care services, with the most being spent in Portugal (66%) and Cyprus (65%) and the least in the Czech Republic (47%).

The second highest expenditure was generally for medical goods with Bulgaria (43%) and Romania (37%) spending the most in this category. Expenditure for long-term health care represented more than a quarter of health expenditure in the Netherlands and Sweden.
