Health expenditure compared to GDP was highest among the EU member states in Sweden, France, Germany and the Netherlands (all around 11% of GDP) in 2014.
In the vast majority of EU Member states, more than half of current healthcare expenditure was spent on curative and rehabilitative care services, with the most being spent in Portugal (66%) and Cyprus (65%) and the least in the Czech Republic (47%).
The second highest expenditure was generally for medical goods with Bulgaria (43%) and Romania (37%) spending the most in this category. Expenditure for long-term health care represented more than a quarter of health expenditure in the Netherlands and Sweden.
