Webinars on Advances in Business Production Networks Analysis

In the coming months Statistics Netherlands and the European Network for Better Establishment Statistics (ENBES) are organising a series of five webinars on Advances in Business Production Networks Analysis. Business level production networks analysis is a methodology that has been developing in the last decade and is now reaching maturity as an innovative approach to dealing with complex economic phenomena. It is becoming increasingly clear how the challenges the modern world faces - such as climate change, the need for an energy transition, disturbances in supply chains – are interconnected at the global level. The webinars will demonstrate how the business production networks approach is better able to depict the modern economic complexity, by:

  • introducing techniques for compiling business network datasets;
  • describing methods and tools to analyse these datasets.
  • presenting examples of how national statistical institutes (NSIs) compile such datasets;
  • showing how policy makers and academic researchers apply theses datasets to improve their understanding of the economic relations at the national, international and global levels.

The webinar series will be given on five half-day sessions this autumn:

  • Day 1 (Wednesday 21 September, 14.00-17.00h CEST): case studies of successfully applying business production networks methodology to modern-day economic problems, with speakers Vasco Carvalho (Cambridge University) and Glenn Magerman (Université Libre de Bruxelles).
  • Day 2 (Thursday 6 October, 14.00-17.00h CEST): sources, methods and practical examples of NSIs compiling business production network data at the national level, with speakers Diego Garlaschelli (Leiden University; Lucca University), Victor Meirinhos (Office for National Statistics UK) and Frank Pijpers   (Statistics Netherlands).
  • Day 3 (Thursday 3 November, 14.00-17.00h CET): using applications and indicators to reap the benefits from the basic datasets, with speakers Andreas Moxnes (Oslo University) and Edwin de Jonge (Statistics Netherlands).
  • Day 4 (Thursday 10 November, 14.00-17.00h CET): compiling and using business network data at the international level (e.g. EU), with speakers András Borsos (Hungarian Central Bank; Complexity Science Hub Vienna), François Lafond (Oxford University), Gert Buiten (Statistics Netherlands) and Frank Takes (Leiden University, University of Amsterdam).
  • Day 5 (Thursday 24 November, 14.00-17.00h CET): discussion on possible next steps and setting up potential collaborations.

The series is aimed at methodologists, researchers and decision makers at NSIs, international statistical bodies, academia, and national and international economic policy institutes.
