Tourism Statistics Week in Nara

Eurostat played an active role in two international events relating to tourism statistics, packaged as the Nara Tourism Statistics Week, from 17 to 21 November 2014 in Japan.

The 13th Global Forum on Tourism Statistics co-organised by Eurostat and the OECD welcomed over 200 registered participants from 40 different countries (of which 13 European countries), including tourism statisticians and researchers, policy makers, tourism boards, businesses in the tourism sector and academics.

Eurostat, as co-organiser of the event, not only opened and closed the forum but also made a presentation on the governance and harmonization of tourism statistics in the EU and chaired a session on the use of big data for tourism statistics (which included a presentation on the recently finalized feasibility study on the use of mobile positioning data).

Back-to-back with the Global Forum, the UN World Tourism Organisation organised a Special Workshop on Tourism Statistics. Eurostat co-chaired a session called "The institutional and technical requirements for successful Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSA) implementation" and made a presentation on with the current state-of-affairs of TSA in Europe.
