DGINS2018 - Bucharest Memorandum adopted

The heads of the statistical offices adopted on Friday, 12 October 2018, the "Bucharest Memorandum on Official Statistics in a datafied society (Trusted Smart Statistics)" following the DGINS (Directors General of the National Statistical Institutes) conference with the title "The European path towards Trusted Smart Statistics", which took place from 10-11 October 2018.

Chosing this topic, the DGINS recognised that the rapid and transformative developments in the Internet-of-Things and, more generally, the penetration of digital technologies into everyday life represent fundamental challenges, opportunities, threats and responsibilities for the European Statistical System.

In essence, the topic of the DGINS Conference concentrated on the future role of official statistics in a largely digital society. The Bucharest Memorandum follows the Scheveningen Memorandum from 2013 on Big Data and Official Statistics. The latter marked the start of exploring big data for use in official statistics within the European Statistical System in a coordinated way. The Bucharest Memorandum acknowledges the achievements reached so far and identifies priorities to further develop the European Statistical System in a datafied society towards Trusted Smart Statistics.
