Back International Recommendations on Internally Displaced Persons Statistics (IRIS)

The International Recommendations on Internally Displaced Persons Statistics (IRIS) provide a set of specific recommendations that countries and international organizations can use to improve the production, overall quality, coordination, and dissemination of statistics on internally displaced persons (IDPs).

The recommendations were produced as part of the mandate of the Expert Group on Refugee and Internally Displaced Persons Statistics (EGRIS). They have been developed as a joint and consolidated effort of experts from the national statistical systems and international organizations, all members of EGRIS. The recommendations were adopted by the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) in March 2020.

Although a separate product, the IRIS recommendations are aligned with the International Recommendations on Refugee Statistics (IRRS), also developed by the EGRIS. The link between these two documents is important because of similarities between the production of statistics about the two populations concerned, which are often both relevant in the same given country, particularly where returning refugees may be reintegrating alongside IDPs.

The IRIS recommendations build on the Technical Report on Statistics of Internally Displaced Persons, and links between IRIS and the technical report are referenced throughout, particularly in respect of country practices.
