Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports that consumer goods and services in the Netherlands were 1.2 percent more expensive in December than one year previously. In November, the inflation rate stood at 1.6 percent. Inflation is measured each month as the increase in the consumer price index (CPI) relative to the same month in the previous year. The December inflation rate is the same as the flash estimate published on 5 January.
The CPI also presents the price development on the previous month. Consumer prices in December 2023 were on average at virtually the same level as they were in November 2023.
Price developments of energy (gas, electricity and district heating) has long had a major impact on the course of inflation. The inflation rate excluding energy and motor fuels was 3.4 percent versus 4.2 percent in November.
With the December figure being known, the inflation rate for the entire year can also be calculated. On average, consumer prices were 3.8 percent higher in 2023 than they were in the previous year. The inflation rate excluding energy was 6.5 percent.
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports that the CPI inflation rate was 1.2 percent in December according to the flash estimate. The estimate was conducted on the basis of still incomplete source data. This was 1.6 percent in November. Inflation is measured monthly as the change in the consumer price index (CPI) relative to one year previously.
The CPI also presents the price development compared to the previous month; according to the flash estimate, consumer prices in December 2023 were on average at almost the same level as in November 2023.
The price development of energy (gas, electricity and district heating) has long had a major impact on the course of inflation. The inflation rate excluding energy was 3.4 percent according to the flash estimate. In November, this was 4.2 percent. Inflation excluding energy and motor fuels peaked at 8.1 percent in February and March and been trending lower since then.
The December figure can also be used to estimate 2023 inflation. According to the flash estimate, consumer goods and services were 3.8 percent more expensive than one year previously.
The regular consumer price index (CPI) figures of December and over 2023 will be published on 11 January.

The Dutch population will continue to increase in the coming years, but less rapidly than in recent years; it is projected to reach 18 million in 2024 and 19 million in 2037. Population growth is largely attributable to migration and increased life expectancy. By 2040, a quarter of the population will be aged 65 years or older. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this today on the basis of the latest Population forecast for the period 2023–2070.
According to the flash estimate of inflation by Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the inflation rate stands at 1.6 percent in November. The estimate was conducted on the basis of still incomplete source data. In October, it was -0.4 percent. Inflation is measured monthly as the change in the consumer price index (CPI) relative to the same month of the previous year.
The higher inflation rate does not mean that prices increased in November 2023 relative to October 2023. The CPI also presents the price development compared to the previous month; according to the flash estimate, consumer prices were 1.1 percent lower in November than they were in October.
The price development of energy (gas, electricity and district heating) has long had a major impact on the course of inflation. The inflation rate excluding energy was 4.1 percent according to the flash estimate. This was 5.1 percent in October. In the first half of 2023, inflation excluding energy and motor fuels was above the current level, peaking at 8.1 percent in February and March.
The regular consumer price index (CPI) figures will be published on 12 December.
In October 2023, prices of owner-occupied dwellings (excluding new constructions) were on average 2.3 percent lower than in October 2022. This means the year-on-year price droptrend downwards has levelled off againfurther. Compared Relative to September 2023, prices rose by 0.7 percent in October. This is evident from price monitoring of existing owner-occupied dwellings by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and The Netherlands’ Cadastre, Land Registry and Mapping Agency (Kadaster).
House prices up by 0.7 percent on September
Relative to September, the price index of existing owner-occupied dwellings increased by 0.7 percent in October. House prices reached a low in June 2013; they subsequently followed an upward trend until August 2022. Then the trend reversed, but prices have risen again over the past five months. In October, house prices were 92 percent higher than during the low in June 2013.
More housing transactions in October
According to The Netherlands’ Cadastre, the total number of housing transactions recorded over the month of October stands at 15,705. This is almost 6 percent more than one year previously. In the first ten months of this year, altogether 147,590 dwellings changed owners, representing a decrease of almost 6 percent on the same period in 2022.
In October, the average transaction price for owner-occupied dwellings was 424,521 euros. The average selling price may show a different trend than the price index for existing owner-occupied dwellings of CBS and The Netherlands’ Cadastre, Land Registry and Mapping Agency. Unlike the price index, the average transaction price does not take into account differences in the quality of dwellings. In order to determine price developments of existing owner-occupied dwellings, it is therefore better to use the price index.
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports that the inflation rate was -0.4 percent in October. In September, consumer goods and services in the Netherlands were still 0.2 percent more expensive than in the same month last year. Inflation is measured each month as the increase in the consumer price index (CPI) relative to the same month in the previous year. October's inflation rate is the same as the flash estimate published on October 31.
The fact that inflation is negative in October is entirely because energy prices were particularly high in October 2022. Excluding energy and motor fuels, inflation would have been 5.1 percent in October, down from 5.5 percent in September. In the first half of 2023, inflation excluding energy and motor fuels was higher than it is now, peaking at 8.1 percent in February and March.
The drop in inflation does not mean that prices fell in October 2023 relative to September 2023. The CPI also gives insight into price developments on the previous month. Consumer prices were 0.4 percent higher in October than they were in September.
Young adults in the Netherlands face a variety of economic challenges: employers are giving out more temporary contracts, income growth is stagnating, students have to take on more debt, there’s an ongoing housing shortage and inflation is soaring. All this has put pressure on our young generation’s economic position. But does it also lead young adults to put their plans to start a family on hold? Daniël van Wijk, a researcher at the demographic institute NIDI, looked into this using register data from CBS’ System of Social Statistical Datasets. On 25 September, he defended his PhD thesis on this subject at the University of Groningen.

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports that consumer goods and services in the Netherlands were 0.2 percent more expensive in September than in the same month last year. In August, the inflation rate stood at 3.0 percent. Inflation is measured each month as the increase in the consumer price index (CPI) relative to the same month in the previous year. In addition, the CPI provides insight into the development of prices compared to the previous month. Prices fell by 0.4 percent in September relative to August.
The price development of energy has had a major impact on inflation for some time now. In addition to the overall inflation rate, CBS also calculates the monthly average price developments if energy (gas, electricity and district heating) and motor fuel prices are not taken into account. Excluding energy and motor fuels, inflation would have been 5.5 percent in September, down from 6.4 percent in August.
The consumer price index (CPI) decreased by 0.1% in September 2023 compared with the previous month, reaching 106.3 points (December 2020 = 100). Inflation was +1.7% compared with the same month of the previous year. These are the results of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
The 0.1% decrease compared with the previous month is due to several factors including lower prices for hotels and supplementary accommodation. Air fares and prices for domestic and international package holidays also fell. In contrast, prices for leisure-time courses, fuels and heating oil increased, as well as those for clothing and footwear.
The share of employees among refugees with Ukrainian nationality residing in the Netherlands has increased further this year. On 1 May 2023, half of the approximately 68 thousand refugees aged 15 to 64 years had paid work. This was still 44 percent on 1 November 2022. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of newly released figures.
Ukrainian refugees who came to the Netherlands after the Russian invasion in late February 2022 do not need a work permit to work. This puts them in an exceptional position compared to other migrants from outside the European Union or countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
