EU to provide over €37 million to fight piracy in Eastern and Southern Africa

The EU will provide some €37 million to strengthen the fight against piracy in several Eastern and Southern African countries through support for the Programme to promote Regional Maritime Security (MASE). In the past decade, the level of maritime insecurity in the region’s waters has become the highest in the world, undermining development and affecting the wellbeing of millions of people.

New EU support for governance, justice and police

Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs, today announced that the European Union will further support the justice system and police force in Somalia with €44 million. The pledge was made during the Somalia conference in London, which aims to provide support for the Government of Somalia as they rebuild their country after two decades of conflict.
New EU support for access to clean water and sanitation in Malawi

The European Commission has announced that it will support Malawi in its efforts to reach the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) related to water and sanitation. The new programme will be focussed on the most vulnerable population in 15 districts and 7 cities, who have limited access to water and sanitation.

Le commissaire européen chargé du développement, M. Andris Piebalgs, a déclaré aujourd’hui que 27,5 millions € seraient débloqués pour améliorer l'accès de la population aux services fondamentaux (éducation et santé, notamment) et soutenir la gestion de l’eau et l’agriculture au Darfour, dans l’ouest du Soudan. L’Union européenne a annoncé cet engagement financier lors de la conférence internationale des donateurs en faveur du Darfour organisée à Doha (les 7 et 8 avril).

Les chiffres relatifs à l’aide au développement publiés aujourd’hui par l’Organisation de coopération et de développement économiques (OCDE) montrent que l’Union européenne et ses vingt-sept États membres ont encore été les premiers donateurs mondiaux en 2012, fournissant plus de la moitié de l’aide publique au développement (APD), d’après le Comité d’aide au développement (CAD).
