Graphene Connect Industrial Workshop on Biomedical Technologies

Listen to state-of-the-art research, industry representatives giving their view on graphene in biosensor and implant applications. Building on these presentations, there will be moderated group discussions with the possibility of representatives across industry sectors to interact with each other as well as with researchers. The aim of the workshop is to strengthen collaboration throughout the value chain from researchers, to component, system producers and end-users.

Small molecule with a potentially big impact on Alzheimer's

Despite decades of research, a cure for Alzheimer's remains elusive. But work conducted in Europe suggests that the onset and progression of the disease could be prevented or slowed down by a molecule that mimics the activity of a critical protein (neurotrophin) affecting neurons in the brain.

Open consultation on FET Flagship for Horizon 2020 next Work Programme

Do you have a great idea for a research theme that could lead to a new technology? Could it become real if Europe's best minds were put together to work on it? Share your view and the European Commission can make it happen via its Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Flagship programme.

Graphene Flagship project launches second Expression of Interest

The Graphene Flagship's overriding goal is to take graphene, related layered materials and hybrid systems from a state of raw potential to a point where they can revolutionise multiple industries. The Flagship is looking for new industrial partners that bring in specific industrial and technology transfer competences or capabilities that complement the present Flagship consortium. Call topics are on "Magnetic sensors" and "Functional Foams and Coatings". Deadline 22 Feb 2016.

What's the matter with FET-Open, one of the EU funding programmes for Future and Emerging Technologies? Participate in the discussion

Did you know the Horizon 2020 Future and Emerging Technologies programme "FET-Open" receives an extremely high number of submissions each year and the chances of new brilliant ideas to be funded by the EU programme have dramatically dropped? It leaves a lot of great interdisciplinary thinking unrewarded and a lot of people disappointed - this problem needs to be addressed if "FET-Open" is to remain credible as an early detector of future technologies.

Universe Sciences – Spotlight on ERC projects

What is the origin of the Universe? How do galaxies form and evolve? Is there a possibility of extra-terrestrial life? This brochure presents a few projects addressing some of the most important challenges in the field of Universe Sciences which were funded by the European Research Council (ERC).

Horizon 2020 work programme for 2016-2017 published

The European Commission will invest almost €16 billion in research and innovation in the next two years under Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation funding scheme, following a new work programme for 2016-17 adopted on 13 October. The work programme is now available on the participant portal.

European Commission invests €16 billion in funding for research and innovation over next two years

Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation said: "Research and innovation are the engines of Europe's progress and vital to addressing today's new pressing challenges like immigration, climate change, clean energy and healthy societies. Over the next two years, €16 billion from Horizon 2020 will support Europe's top scientific efforts, making the difference to citizens' lives."

Video games or exercise for stroke rehab?

Would you rather squeeze a ball to exercise your weaker hand or play video games? An EU-funded project tested the concept on a group of patients in Israel recovering after a stroke. The idea was unanimously popular and also saw patients working harder – without realising it – than during traditional rehabilitation exercises.

Fat – the full story for better health

An EU-funded researcher has developed a way to study directly how the body processes and stores fat. New information from his method is helping scientists better understand how to prevent serious health conditions.

A better view of the early universe

When we look at galaxies far, far away, we don’t see them as they are today. We see them as they were a long time ago, because their light takes a while to reach us. These images could easily fade on their epic journey, but “natural telescopes” in their path enable astronomers to study some of these postcards from the distant past.
