Back Maghreb countries 1994

The Union of the Arab Maghreb (UAM) was founded on 17 February 1989. Its members are the five North African countries Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia, which are referred to as the Maghreb countries. The accentuation of the economic crises, especially in Algeria and Libya in the mid-1980s, the world-wide tendency to form regional economic alliances, the southward enlargement of European Community in 1986 and the imminent completion of the European internal market were the key reasons that prompted the political representatives of the North African countries to place regional cooperation on a new, wider basis and to join together to form a community of countries. - The German version of this statistical document may be obtained from Hermann Leins GmbH & Co.
