In 2023, the vast majority (93.9%) of EU enterprises used a fixed broadband connection to access the internet. The share was even higher for medium and large enterprises, where almost all enterprises reported connecting to the internet via fixed broadband.

Compared to the pre-pandemic levels in 2019 (91%), 2023 saw an increase of 2.9 percentage points (pp) in fixed broadband connection among enterprises across EU countries. The most notable increases were seen in Greece (15.8 pp), Romania (15.6 pp), and Bulgaria (8.7 pp).

Regarding internet speeds, enterprises that had a maximum contracted download speed of the fastest fixed line internet connection of at least 1 Gb/s increased by 0.9 pp across EU enterprises in 2023. The highest increases were seen in the Mediterranean islands of Cyprus (5.1 pp) and Malta (4.6 pp), followed by Spain (3.8 pp). Decreases were noted in Sweden (-2.1 pp), Lithuania (-1.6 pp), and Latvia (-0.5 pp).

In terms of countries that have the highest share of enterprises with such a connection, this stood at 12.8% in the EU, a 0.9 pp markup from the 2022 figure (11.9%). Denmark (29.1%), Portugal (22.2%), and Spain (21%) led the way. On the other end of the scale, Greece (2.9%), Croatia (4.8%), and Estonia (5.3%) had the lowest share of enterprises.
