Today and tomorrow (18-19 October 2018) the European Union (EU) is hosting the 12th Summit of the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Brussels. The summit brings together the 28 EU Member States, Norway, Switzerland and 21 Asian partner countries to discuss a range of areas of common interest, including trade in goods.
These 21 partner countries together accounted for 39 % of EU total international trade in goods in 2017. More specifically, they were the destination of 31 % of exports from the EU and the origin of 47 % of EU imports. The deficit in trade in goods stood at €294 billion in 2017, which is above the deficit recorded in 2016 (€267 billion) and below the peak deficit of €320 billion reached in 2008.

In terms of the share of EU-ASEM total trade in goods, the top five trading partners with the EU in 2017 were China (39 %), Russia (16 %), Japan (9 %), South Korea (7 %) and India (6 %). The share of EU total trade in goods with China has increased by 9 percentage points since 2007. In contrast, over the same period there have been declines in the shares of EU total trade in goods with Russia (24 % in 2007) and Japan (12 % in 2007).
