Back Treaty of Rome celebrates its 60th anniversary

25 March 2017

On 25 March 1957 in Rome, the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community was signed. At that time, the Community was made up of 6 Member States with a combined population of 170 million.

60 years later, the European Union has 28 Member States and 510 million inhabitants. Today, around two-thirds of the international trade of the 28 Member States take place within the single market.

Eurostat would like to wish a "Happy Birthday" to the Treaty of Rome. We would also like to say "Happy Birthday" to the 6.6 million people in the EU who also turn 60 this year. Our gift is an animated infographic available on Twitter.
