In 2018, EU Member States imported 508.4 million tonnes (Mt) of crude oil from third countries, a decrease of 7.5% compared to 2008 (549.7 Mt). Restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic may accentuate this trend.

Russia: main EU supplier of crude oil

Almost two thirds of these imports came from six countries. The largest share came from Russia (151.6 Mt, representing 30% of total crude oil imports to the EU) followed at a distance by Iraq (44.0 Mt, 9%). Then came Saudi Arabia (37.8 Mt), Norway (36.7 Mt), Kazakhstan (36.5 Mt) and Nigeria (35.9 Mt), each accounting for 7% of total EU imports.
