In 2017, Switzerland was EU's fourth largest partner for imports (6 % of total extra-EU imports) and third largest for EU exports (8 % of total extra-EU exports).
From 2008 to 2017, the EU ran a trade surplus (meaning that they exported more than they imported) with Switzerland, reaching a surplus of EUR 40 billion in 2017.
For both EU exports and imports with Switzerland, "machinery and vehicles", "chemicals" and "other manufactured goods" dominated in 2017. Together these manufactured goods accounted for 78 % of EU exports to and 83 % of imports from Switzerland. At a more detailed level, "medicaments" was the most traded product between the EU and Switzerland.
Germany: main traders with Switzerland among the Member States
Among the Member States, Germany (EUR 43 billion) was the largest importer from Switzerland and also the main exporter (EUR 54 million) in 2017.
