Between the third and the fourth quarter of 2017, 3.2 million people (19.6% of all unemployed in the third quarter of 2017) found a job. During this period, 9.9 million (59.7%) remained unemployed and a further 3.4 million (20.7%) became economically inactive. These figures do not include data for Germany.
Of all those initially in employment in the third quarter of 2017, 2.6 million (1.4%) became unemployed in the fourth quarter of 2017, and 4.9 million (2.6%) transitioned into economic inactivity.
From those initially counted as economically inactive in the third quarter of 2017, 3.7 million (3.2%) moved into employment in the fourth quarter 2017, and 3.9 million (3.4%) transitioned into unemployment.

In the graph, the figures for employment, unemployment and inactivity refer to the number of people remaining in each status between the two quarters. The grey arrows indicate the direction of net flows.
