Information on data
The topics below correspond to the way the folders in the database are organised.
This database folder contains data from the surveys on the structure of agricultural holdings, including data by region on:
- number of agricultural holdings
- area of crops
- livestock numbers
- farm labour force (including their age, gender, and relationship to the holder)
- economic size of the holdings
- specialisation
- other gainful activities on the farm
- machinery
- organic farming.
This database folder contains data on the results of the agricultural economic performance in current and constant prices as well as indices for:
- values for output
- input, gross value added
- income
- labour input
- subsidies and taxes.
The full set of economic accounts for agriculture (EAA) and of regional EAA are published on an annual basis. Eurostat also publishes first and second estimates of these accounts at national level.
This database folder contains data on:
- agricultural price indices, quarterly and annual data
- absolute prices, annual data
- agricultural land prices and rents, annual data.
This database folder contains data expressed in physical units, like number, weight or quantity on:
- crop production (area, yield, production), annual data
- land use, annual data
- livestock (number and structure), annual data
- meat, milk and milk products production, and activity of hatcheries (incubation and trade), monthly and annual data
- balance sheets, annual data.
This database folder contains data on:
- number of organic operators, such as producers (agricultural holdings, aquaculture production units), processors, importers, exporters, and other operators, for example wholesalers and retailers
- crop area fully converted and under conversion to organic
- organic crop production from fully converted area
- organic livestock and organic products of animal origin

Orchards
This database folder provides data on the details on the plantations of 7 species of fruit trees:
- dessert apples
- dessert pears
- peaches
- apricots
- oranges
- lemons
- small-fruited citrus fruits.
In addition, information on cooking apples and cooking pears is available by country and production zone and classified according to age classes, density, and varieties.
In 2023, the data on the structure of orchards is integrated into the farm structure data collection.
Vineyards
This database folder provides data on the details of areas with vines, carried out by EU countries with at least 500 hectares of vines in the open air.
The basic survey is carried out every 10 years and the intermediate survey is done annually.
In 2026, the data on the structure of vineyards will be integrated into the farm structure data collection.
This database folder contains data on:
- pesticides sales and use
- agricultural nutrients
- environmental-related farm characteristics
- special topics, such as air pollutants or greenhouse gas emissions.
These data are available at national and, where appropriate, regional level.
Harmonised risk indicators for pesticides
Harmonised risk indicators (HRIs) are used to estimate the trends in risk from pesticides use. More specifically, they help to measure progress in the reduction of risks from pesticides use for human health and the environment.
Eurostat calculates the indicators for the EU aggregate. National statistical offices in the EU countries should calculate the HRIs for their country.
For information on the farm to fork strategy indicators for pesticides, please consult our methodology page.
Initially, the purpose of agricultural statistics was to monitor the main objectives of the common agricultural policy's (CAP) of the European Commission, such as the production and supply of agricultural products and income in the farming sector.
In recent decades, new indicators and statistics have emerged, reflecting the changes in EU policies. In particular, the European Commission's farm to fork strategy, which is an integral part of the European green deal. It aims to establish a sustainable food system in the EU that is fair, healthy, and environmentally-friendly. In addition, some indicators with an environmental focus, such as the use and impact of pesticides and organic farming, have been developed.
In 2015, a strategy for agricultural statistics for 2020 and beyond was agreed, designed to modernise this area of statistics. The result has been the adoption of a new regulation on statistics on agricultural inputs and outputs (SAIO). This should help to improve the accuracy of statistics as well as the knowledge of agricultural practices and production.
