Information on data
The topics below correspond to the way the folders in the database are organised.
This database folder contains data from the surveys on the structure of agricultural holdings, including data by region, on:
- number of agricultural holdings, their economic size, and specialisation
- area of crops and farmland use, including organic farming, orchards, and vineyards
- livestock numbers
- farm labour force (including by age, gender, and relationship to the holder)
- management and practices, including among others tenure, machinery, and irrigation
- animal housing
- other gainful activities on the farm and support for rural development.
This database folder contains data on agricultural economic performance, in current prices and in previous year prices, as well as indices for:
- output values
- input values
- gross value added
- income
- labour input
- subsidies and taxes.
The full set of economic accounts for agriculture (EAA) and of regional EAA are published annually. Eurostat also publishes first and second estimates of these accounts at national level.
This database folder contains data on:
- agricultural absolute input prices (annual data)
- agricultural price indices (quarterly and annual)
- agricultural land prices and rents (annual).
This data folder contains data expressed in physical units, on:
- livestock populations (mostly annual data, although for some collections and for some countries granted exemptions, data are submitted only 3 times every 10 years)
- meat production (monthly, quarterly, semestrial, and annual)
- milk and milk products (monthly and annual)
- activity and structure of hatcheries: chicks, incubation, and trade (monthly and annual)
- structure of milk dairies (3 times every 10 years).
This database folder contains annual data expressed in physical units, like numbers, weights or quantities, on:
- crop production (area, yield, production)
- balance sheets.
This database folder contains data on:
- number of organic operators, such as producers (agricultural holdings, aquaculture production units), processors, importers, exporters, and other operators, for example wholesalers and retailers
- crop area fully converted and under conversion to organic
- organic crop production from fully converted area
- organic livestock and organic products of animal origin
- organic aquaculture production units and organic aquaculture products.
This database folder contains data on:
- plant protection products placed on the market and their use in agriculture
- agricultural nutrients
- environmental-related farm characteristics
- special topics, such as air pollutants, greenhouse gas emissions.
These data are available at country level, and a selection of indicators is also published for regions.
Harmonised risk indicators for pesticides
Harmonised risk indicators (HRIs) are used to estimate the trends in the risk from pesticides use. More specifically, they help to measure progress in the reduction of risks from pesticides use for human health and the environment.
Eurostat calculates the indicators for the EU aggregate. National statistical offices in the EU countries should calculate the HRIs for their country.
In addition to the HRIs, Eurostat also provides the data used for the monitoring of 2 other non-legally binding pesticide reduction targets: a 50% reduction in the use and risk of chemical pesticides and a 50% reduction in the use of more hazardous pesticides.
Initially, the purpose of agricultural statistics was to monitor the main objectives of the common agricultural policy's (CAP) of the European Commission, such as the production and supply of agricultural products and income in the farming sector.
In recent decades, new indicators and statistics have emerged, reflecting the changes in EU policies such as the EU's vision for agriculture and food that sets out a plan for making Europe's food systems more sustainable, resilient and competitive.
