Horizon 2020. First results.

Horizon 2020 is the EU’s biggest ever programme for research and innovation, and it has got off to an excellent start. This brochure presents information on the first 100 calls for proposals that closed by 1 December 2014.

Horizon 2020 indicators. Assessing the results and impact of Horizon

Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU research and innovation programme ever. Almost €80 billion of funding is available over seven years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private and national public investment that this money will attract. This publication presents the full set of Key Performance and Cross-Cutting Issues Indicators for Horizon 2020, including those for the European Institute of Technology and EURATOM.

A fresh look at a lighter, greener tail cone

EU-funded researchers have tested new techniques to manufacture lighter aircraft tail cones with the aim of reducing fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and noise. The results are mixed, but the tests and development of the techniques have helped boost competitiveness within Europe’s aviation sector, they say.

Foreseeing the cities of the future?

To confront the current challenge of managing a city of 20 million, the Egyptian government has revealed plans earlier this year (2015) to build a new capital city, 45 kilometres east of Cairo. The ambitious project tackles growth over the next 50 years and has been set to adapt to future challenges, including population density and land constraints. Like Cairo, many other metropolises are currently under pressure.

3D city modelling for smarter parking

Tired of endlessly looking for a parking spot? Dreaming of having a bird's-eye view to locate free spaces in a congested city? ERC grantee Prof Luc Van Gool is a research leader in the area of computer vision. With his project "VarCity", he works to innovate existing 3D city modelling by using object class recognition methods and crowd generated data.

Tracking innovation in intelligent transportation systems

Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are all around us: they let us know when the next bus will reach our bus stop, help monitor and manage road traffic and make air travel safer. But how does innovation work at this complex intersection between the transport and the ICT industries? The T-TRANS project found answers and laid the foundations for a European ITS innovation network.

Bio-fuelling air travel

Carbon dioxide emissions and decreasing global reserves of fossil fuels are two of the biggest challenges that must be addressed in the 21st century. Developing fuels that do not rely on petroleum and discovering other alternative fuels is one way to help decrease the carbon emissions that impact climate change, reduce the growing cost of fuel, and provide more ecologically and economically sustainable air travel.

Take-off in sight for quieter aircraft

Noise from aircraft raises stress to unhealthy levels and reduces quality of life for those living and working near airports. An EU-funded project has developed promising technologies that together could cut aircraft noise by 2.3 decibels – building on industry’s efforts to provide relief for those living near airports.

19th International Forum on Advanced Microsystems for Automotive Applications (AMAA 2015) - Smart Systems for Green and Automated Driving

Leading engineers and scholars from all around the world are cordially invited to participate in the dialogue and submit proposals for papers addressing ongoing research and novel developments in this field.

Discussions at the conference will focus particularly on the application areas mentioned below. A special attention will be given to topics covered in public funding programmes like the European Green Vehicles Initiative PPP of Horizon 2020.

Horizon 2020 Statistics - the first 100 calls

By 1 December 2014 the first 100 calls had closed. What can we tell about the popularity of the programme, the success of SMEs, the degree to which the programme has attracted newcomers - both as participants and as expert evaluators - the proportion of women experts and the speed with which contracts have been signed? See this new page to find out more!

Next generation lighter-than-air hybrid air vehicles

The Airlander hybrid air vehicle is a new form of aircraft designed by Hybrid Air Vehicles Ltd (HAV). The vehicle combines inert lifting gas, aerodynamics and vectored thrust to deliver ‘game changing’ performance, compared to current flight technologies.

Labels to show how retreaded tyres stack up against new tyres

An EU-funded project has provided the data needed for labels that would classify the environmental impact and safety of retreaded truck tyres – an environmentally-friendly, cost-effective alternative to new tyres, which must already have such labels under EU law. The project results should help consumers choose between new and retreaded tyres more objectively, maintaining confidence in retreaded tyres and preserving jobs in retreading SMEs.

Mind control takes flight

An EU-funded project has flown a drone controlled from the ground using only a person’s brainwaves. The technology could one day make it easier to pilot larger aircraft, such as cargo jets, and result in safer airways, say the project’s researchers.

Priorities for science and innovation policy: opportunities, structures and investment

Timed to examine Government's post-election plans for UK science and innovation policy, and informed by the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee's inquiry on Priorities for science, this seminar will bring together key stakeholders from the academic community and R&D-intensive industries with policymakers.

Keynote address by Dr Jack Metthey, Director, Policy Development and Coordination: "Making the most of Horizon 2020 ‐ UK involvement in EU science programmes"

21st EARMA Annual Conference 2015

This year the theme for the conference is Global Outreach: Enabling Cultures and Diversity in Research Management and Administration. This theme reflects the growing need and ambition to reach out and get connected and work together globally. Cooperating not only in the field of scientific research & innovation and higher education but also in the field of research management and administration.

Young researchers address Europe’s ageing infrastructure challenges

With transport demand increasing rapidly, an EU-funded network investigated how to ease the strain on Europe’s ageing roads, railways and bridges, while training a new generation of researchers at the same time. The team used the latest technologies to improve maintenance techniques and design methods.
