Back Ready to take off? Visualise air transport

7 December 2018

Today is International Civil aviation day. To mark this occasion, Eurostat invites you to try out our interactive tool on air passenger transport. It has been updated with 2017 data and covers the European Union and EFTA countries.

More than one billion passengers travelled by air in the European Union last year. Do you know which airports in your country were the busiest and which destinations were the most popular?

London-Heathrow and Paris-Charles de Gaulle were Europe’s busiest airports. Together they flew over 2.2 million passengers on one route to the US. Can you guess the route?

Amsterdam's Schiphol, Frankfurt-Main and Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas airports were particularly used for flying to other European destinations. Do you know which ones?

You can find the answers to these and many other questions using our interactive tool: just select an airport on the map and the visualisation will display the top five routes from that airport. You will also see the number of flights and the number of passengers flying. In addition, you can see the share of passengers carried to and from other EU member states (intra-EU), the share flying to countries outside the EU (extra-EU), and the share flying to other cities in the same country (national).
