
Road freight transport in the European Union (EU) increased by 4.5 % between 2016 and 2017, in terms of tonne-kilometres (tkm). Between 2013 and 2017, EU road freight transport rose by 11.8 %.
Four Member States had year on year increases in road freight transport (tkm) greater than 15 % in 2017: Lithuania (+ 26.2 %), Cyprus (+17.5 %), Greece (+ 15.5 %) and Poland (15.3 %). In contrast, the largest falls were in Belgium (-13.4 %), Czechia (-12.0 %) and Estonia (-7.8 %).
In terms of the proportion of total tonne-kilometres of road freight transport attributable to EU Member States in 2017, Poland had the highest share (18 %), followed by Germany (16 %), Spain (12 %), France (9 %), the United Kingdom (8 %) and Italy (6 %). All other Member States had shares below 4 %.
