Helping Danish SMEs find ways to exploit ‘big data’

SMEs based in Denmark’s Central Jutland and Capital regions have found new ways to exploit the huge amounts of data they generate. The Innovative Use of Big Data project provided 26 companies from a variety of industrial sectors with access to some of the country’s leading researchers in data processing and visualisation. Many of the companies involved in this ERDF-backed project have developed practical products and solutions which will boost their competitiveness.

EU support helps Polish company create new battery-powered lift truck

The project enabled Polish transport and loading equipment company Zakrem to manufacture a battery-powered platform lift truck. It can move heavy goods in workshops, warehouses and factories. A particularly innovative aspect is the electric drive feature. Because the engine is located in the drive wheel, it can lift and carry loads of up to 600 kg – much higher than the load capacities of most manual trucks, which stand at around 350 kg. The WAPP1-0601 is one of the first of its kind to be produced in Europe.

Baltic Blue Growth shows how mussel farming is good for business and the environment thanks to Interreg

The Interreg project Baltic Blue Growth demonstrated the environmental and economic benefits of blue mussel farming: it paved the way to make it common practice in the Baltic Sea region. The partnership consisted of mussel producers, public authorities, policy-makers and research institutions from Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Poland and Sweden.

Relief for nickel allergy sufferers thanks to Polish firm’s innovation

People suffering from an allergy to nickel, a metal present in many everyday items, now have the means to prevent the unpleasant symptoms, thanks to Polish firm KF Niccolum. EU-funding helped the Warsaw-based developer of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products conduct studies to verify the barrier effect of a new active substance to be used in its products. The safe, non-toxic ingredients can be applied as a cream or a spray. The result is an end to the common symptoms of contact dermatitis, like itching, burning, rashes, or oozing blisters.

The EU-funded EcoDesign Circle project set out to ensure that consumer goods are designed and produced to limit their environmental impact. Design centres from six countries in the Baltic Sea Region worked with environmental experts to help SMEs minimise the environmental impact of their products, while maximising the benefits.

Two Berlin-based optometrists achieved their dream of self-employment and helping improve people’s quality of life by establishing their own practice, Lieblingsbrille Augenoptik. Christin Drabe and Lars Nagel were able to do so with the help of the European Regional Development Fund's support for skilled crafts- and tradespeople.
