InnoEnvi - Environmental mini clusters

The South Finland region successfully created environmental mini clusters which have generated sustainable cooperation which is now being extended nationally and internationally. 74 companies were involved in the 5 mini-clusters, each one containing one larger company to "drive" the project, as well as research institutions and universities. The cooperation and development projects have resulted in a number of commercial results and business to business developments.

The inter-regional ENCOURAGE partnership aims to promote environmental management practices in the business parks of five European new towns by adapting a management method used for green buildings in the French region of Ile-de-France. ENCOURAGE is a six year project (2002-2008) co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the INTERREG IIIB programme initiated by the Syndicat d'Agglomération Nouvelle (SAN) from Sénart (Ile-de-France) in partnership with Southeast Wales (Torfaen, UK), Hertfordshire (Stevenage, UK) and Zuid-Holland (Zoetermeer, the Netherlands).

Barcelona Science Park (PCB, Parc Científic de Barcelona)

The Barcelona Science Park (Parc Científic de Barcelona - PCB) is an initiative aimed at consolidating the University of Barcelona’s mission to interact with business and society. PCB is focused on life sciences and biomedicine. It brings together public research centres, larger companies, as well as the CIDEM-PCB Bioincubator (CIDEM is the Catalan Government’s Centre for Business Development and Innovation) and supported spin-offs, all of which work essentially in emerging research areas of biotechnology, chemistry, pharmacy and nano-bio-engineering.

INNOMAR

A partnership involving marine research organisations, local authorities and fishermen in Crete has piloted innovative methods for the sustainable management of marine biological resources. Non-used fishing catch was reared in aquaculture facilities and fast growing species were also successfully reproduced. The partners are participating in a new regional proposal for the creation of a cluster for the sustainable exploitation of marine resources.

Floating Autonomous Environmental Friendly and Efficient Desalination Unit

The University of the Aegean in cooperation with the Region of South Aegean developed a floating platform that uses energy provided from renewable sources and produces potable water for the islands. The drinking water is produced from seawater, while the energy to desalinate this water is provided by a wind generator and photovoltaic system.

Optimisation of the Socorridos Hydro power station Madeira

This project concerns optimisation of the Socorridos Hydroelectric Power Station in use since 1995. It is the largest and most important hydraulic system for production of water for public supply, irrigation and hydro energy in Madeira. The project represents an important step forward in the process of taking advantage of renewable energy sources, particularly of eolic origin.
