The European Commission is inviting stakeholders to share their practical knowledge and ideas for projects to implement the Atlantic Action Plan at the Stakeholder Platform conference to be held on 20 January 2015 in Porto, Portugal. The deadline for submission is 7 November 2014.

The aim of the exercise is to determine how current monitoring programmes and data availability meets the needs of public and private users.
Whilst considerable progress has been made in mapping the topography of Europe's offshore waters and making the data available through digital terrain models, it is intrinsically more expensive to measure the depth of water in shallow coastal waters because of instrument characteristics and because there is a need to join up with land surveys.
The Baltic Sea agenda for sustainable blue growth, adopted by the European Commission on 16 May 2014, provides a blueprint for harnessing the region’s strengths to boost innovation and growth in the maritime area. Sustainability is an integral part of the plan as it can act as a driver for innovation and more jobs, like in the area of clean shipping.
The blue economy is already creating new jobs in Europe but we have only scratched the surface of its potential. We have been thinking about how to build on existing progress and how we can benefit from new research insights to ensure that this blue economy can continue to generate jobs across Europe. Why do we need innovation in the blue economy?
The European Commission today set out proposals to support "Innovation in the Blue Economy" (see IP/14/536) by creating an information platform on marine research in the European Union, sharing already available data and completing a detailed sea-bed map of European waters by 2020, among other measures.
Two thirds of our planet is covered by oceans and seas. If we manage them in a responsible manner, they can provide sources of food, medicine and energy while protecting ecosystems for generations to come.
As announced at the Ocean Energy Forum launch in Brussels on the 4th of April, each of the Forum workstreams (technology, finance and environment / consenting) will be led by a Steering Group of approximately 10-12 experts.
