Ambitious research and innovation missions can inspire European citizens, push the frontier for research and innovation, drive economic growth, and help solve some of our society's biggest challenges. These are several conclusions of a report by Professor Mariana Mazzucato, presented today to Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation.

Examples of the highly ambitious targets ahead of the successful FET-Open proposals include a super-resolution microscope in a microfluidic chip smaller than a coin, a novel GPS-free positioning technology, the non-invasive imaging of biochemical processes in the human body, and building a 3D muscle on a chip.

Some examples of the successful proposals are the testing of a drug that inhibits the metabolism of cell lines from several types of tumor, the commercialisation of a new actuator for physical human-robot interaction, the exploitation of an innovative tool to convert inexpensive near-infrared (NIR) light into coherent UVA for industrial and biomedical use.

The preregistration for Nanocar Race II is now open and will close at the end of June 2018.

Achieving energy efficient, cost effective and versatile solar cells has always been a challenge for the scientific community. The emerging perovskite sensitized solar cells (PSCs) are very attractive candidates to fulfil these requirements. Their potential for fast rise in performance attracted intense attention from scientific community and in particular from GOTSolar consortium.

Visible-light microscopy has a severe limitation: its spatial resolution, cannot be better than the classical Rayleigh limit of about half the photon wavelength. This means it can't be used in virus observation for example. SUPERTWIN project aims to break this limit by taking advantage of photon entanglement, a special state of light where “twin” photons have highly correlated properties.

A new Partnership on Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) will soon start to develop much-needed solutions for a more sustainable management of water and agro-food systems. A proposal to set up PRIMA was today adopted in a vote in the European Parliament plenary meeting in Strasbourg.
