Celebrating a touch of genius, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) announces the 41 nominees for the EIT Awards 2018. All across Europe, excellence is accelerating, with women entrepreneurs making up more than 40% of the nominees. The Awards ceremony will be held in Budapest on 4 October during the EIT’s annual Innovation Forum, INNOVEIT. The 41 nominees represent the most promising entrepreneurs and innovators in Europe. The HybridHeart consortium envisions to develop and bring to the clinic a soft biocompatible artificial heart, which can completely replace a patient’s heart in a procedure similar to a heart transplant.

 
Europe must step up its efforts on research and innovation

The European Council confirmed in Brussels yesterday the set-up of an European Innovation Council for market-creating innovation under the next EU long-term budget. The Council also invited the Commission to launch a new pilot initiative on breakthrough innovation within the remaining time of Horizon 2020.

 
Commission publishes new, expanded Open science monitor

The European Commission released the Open science monitor, a radically expanded, updated version of this key scientific tool, which tracks key indicators in the fast-growing European open science movement. With the objective of providing data and insight needed to support the implementation of open science policies, the Monitor gathers the latest developments, drivers and impacts in the field. In addition, it draws on multiple indicators and rich case studies.

 
Synergies between Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation and European Structural and Investment Funds

This publication is the final report of a study that contributed to the interim evaluation of Horizon 2020. It collected information and data on the overall development of synergies between Horizon 2020 and European Structural and Investment Funds. The study provided evidence that there is a legal basis for synergies in place and that there are overall implementation guidelines for all the institutional synergy actors involved.

 
Widening Actions in Horizon 2020

The interim evaluation of FP7 (November 2010) identified that some Member States, mainly those that joined the EU after 2004, had low participation rates in FP7 projects. Widening actions under the Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation part of Horizon 2020 address the causes of low participation by fully exploiting the potential of Europe’s talent pool.

 
ORCHID: ORgan-on-CHip In Development
