Outdoor electronic display screens could soon blend better into urban landscapes – and resist damage from weather and vandals better than current versions. Technology from an EU-funded project displays digital images through a concrete surface, to integrate low-maintenance signage into buildings and street structures.
Aquaculture is making a vital contribution to feeding the world’s growing population. A project involving one African and several European partners has developed new water purification technologies that remove the nitrogen present in effluent from water used in fish farms. They are likely to reduce the costs and environmental impact of aquaculture waste water.
Why should gluten intolerance condemn people to a lifetime of limited – and often bland – food choices? By using new innovative ingredients and techniques to replicate the taste and texture of gluten, an EU-funded project has taken impressive steps to ensure that nothing is off the menu. The project’s techniques are also helping Europe’s smaller food manufacturers develop new products for the gluten-free market, helping them compete.

The Airlander hybrid air vehicle is a new form of aircraft designed by Hybrid Air Vehicles Ltd (HAV). The vehicle combines inert lifting gas, aerodynamics and vectored thrust to deliver ‘game changing’ performance, compared to current flight technologies.
An EU-funded project has provided the data needed for labels that would classify the environmental impact and safety of retreaded truck tyres – an environmentally-friendly, cost-effective alternative to new tyres, which must already have such labels under EU law. The project results should help consumers choose between new and retreaded tyres more objectively, maintaining confidence in retreaded tyres and preserving jobs in retreading SMEs.
Deciding when to renovate or replace an ageing bridge can be tricky. Risks to safety must be avoided, but acting prematurely may be wasteful. Monitoring techniques developed by an EU-funded project can facilitate such decisions. They are based on an innovative weigh-in-motion system used to check that trucks aren’t overloaded.

EU-funded researchers are extracting small pieces of protein from rice starch by-products for ‘superfoods’ and new cosmetics. These ‘magic’ molecules could add a healthy twist to baby food, sports protein supplements and products for sufferers of coeliac disease. An engineered human skin eliminating any need for animal testing could also be on the market within two years.
Have you ever stared at packaged meat from your fridge or freezer and wondered if it’s still good to eat? Thrown out food because you just weren’t sure? Smart labels could help to set your mind at rest. An EU-funded project has developed innovative stickers to do just that.
Ripe, but not too ripe; sweet, but still a bit tart — to make outstanding wine, grapes must be harvested when they are at their best. Choosing the right moment is one of the key decisions of the winemaking process. The WinePen, a low-cost handheld device developed by the EU-funded PREMIVM project, can help. It is based on innovative techniques that can give winegrowers the information they need much faster than conventional tools.
