SME Instrument in the Transport Challenge: Info Day

The transport directorate of DG Research & Innovation is hosting an information event targeting SMEs and their support organisations. It will present the call topic "Small Business Innovation Research for Transport". Learn all about it in Brussels on the 11th of March!

Innovative inspection system to make buildings safer

Concrete is used everywhere and particularly in critical areas such as high-rise buildings, bridges and industrial facilities. As a construction material concrete offers strength and versatility and its production materials – gravel, sand, cement, water and steel rods - are readily available. But the strength of concrete, particularly the foundation piles, can be damaged during or after installation or indeed over time if subjected to unforeseen stress.

An innovative and expanding journey planner

Location-based services use information on the geographical position of mobile devices like smart phones and tablets. These services are expanding beyond consumer-facing products like the check-in applications (apps) one often sees on Facebook, and nowadays they are even powering advertisements, weather and travel apps.

Probing the brain without surgery

A breakthrough European research project has developed a safe and simple approach that avoids surgery and its associated risks in order to help patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The BrainSafe project uses an innovative technology for non-invasive monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP), the pressure inside the skull and thus the brain tissue and the surrounding fluid.

ICT-enabled public sector innovation in H2020 - Video

Open Government, engagement of young people, open participation, emerging technologies in the public sector, innovative mobile eGovernment, privacy, cloud of public services...

What is our vision of the societal challenge around Public Services? Which are the funding opportunities for these topics in the recently launched Horizon 2020 framework programme?

Mechthild Rohen, Head of the Public Services Unit in DG CONNECT speaks about this. Enjoy this short video.

Superfood alert – probiotic olives for healthy gut

Live organisms such as bacteria and yeast – known as probiotics –have traditionally been added to dairy foods for an extra health boost, but are now making their way to table olives. EU-funded researchers developing this new 'superfood' say it could help Southern Europe’s olive industry become more competitive. Two patents have been registered – in Greece and Spain – for the technology, opening up the way for application on an industrial scale.

Fitted, fast and high-tech: a new generation of surgical implants

A new manufacturing process for surgical implants will reduce the recovery time associated with traditional implants. Developed by EU-funded researchers, the innovative method can be used to build made-to-measure prosthetic teeth, spinal disks and skull plates in 48 hours.

A smart window for optimal ventilation and minimal thermal loss

Efforts to improve exterior shells in buildings via better insulation materials in frames and glass have led to deterioration in the indoor air quality (IAQ), especially in older buildings. The EU-funded project Climawin has developed an “intelligent window” prototype for optimal ventilation and minimal thermal loss.

Keeping underground tourist destinations safe

Caves, catacombs and tunnels are becoming increasingly popular, with Europe boasting more than half of the world’s underground tourist attractions.

The UnderSafe project is developing a monitoring system to deal with the safety concerns and environmental hazards as a result of the rise in below-ground destinations.

Innovative technology to simplify the extraction of olive oil

Current production processes do not maximise olive oil yield and, at the same time, energy use is high. However an EU-funded project introduced a new technology known as pulsed electric field (PEF) in all existing and new mill equipment that will result in higher yields and health benefits to consumers.
