The EIT with the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research is organising an EIT Awareness Day on 13 October 2017 in Tallinn. The event is held as side event to the Estonian Presidency conference on European Research Excellence and aims at raising awareness of the activities, results and achievements of the EIT Community and in particular of the opportunities for engagement. At this interactive, informal event, the EIT Community will provide a general introduction to its activities as well
Nine PhD students funded by the European Commission were involved in the discovery behind the Nobel Prize in Physics 2017.
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2017 has been awarded jointly to Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson for the development of cryo-electron microscopy, which simplifies and improves the imaging of biomolecules. Two of the laureates, Jacques Dubochet and Richard Henderson, have participated in EU-funded research projects.

EIT Community now has a permanent presence in Brussels. The EIT House, which officially opened on 26 September on Rue Guimard, gives the EIT Community a permanent presence in the heart of Europe. The EIT today launches a Call for expressions of interest for the selection of five members of the EIT Governing Board. The EIT Governing Board is entrusted with providing the strategic leadership of the EIT. The board is independent and autonomous in its decision-making and is responsible for the selection, designation and evaluation of the EIT’s Innovation Communities.
The EIT has announced the 21 nominees for the EIT Awards 2017: women entrepreneurs make up 38% of the nominees. The awards ceremony will be held on 16 October during the EIT’s annual Innovation Forum, INNOVEIT, in Budapest. The 21 nominations represent Europe’s most promising entrepreneurs and innovators.

Norbert Kuipers, who won the EIT Innovators Award 2016, has now won the MBR Global Water Award in Dubai. Norbert and the team from TNO won for their MemPower® product, which uses renewable sources of energy such as solar and residual heat to produce very pure water by membrane distillation. An exciting aspect of this is that MemPower® produces but consumes no electricity, while at the same time safe drinking water and electricity can be produced from sea water.
As part of the interim evaluation of Horizon 2020 the EU Research and Innovation Programme, a public stakeholder consultation was launched on 20 October 2016 and closed on 15 January 2017. The results of around 3500 responses and about 300 position papers will be presented at an event organised in cooperation with the European Economic and Social Committee on 28 April.
The world's first zero-emissions electric plane, developed by Lilium, a start-up supported by EIT Climate-KIC, has taken to the skies. Lilium's aim is to design the world’s fastest and highest-range commercially available electric aircraft. The two-seater light aircraft is made of carbon fibre, has 36 jet engines powered by several thousand Lithium-Ion batteries, consumes half the energy of today’s most efficient electric cars and even has a parachute as the ultimate safety back-up.
Startup Europe comes to Silicon Valley (SEC2SV) - the premier programme for future European startup unicorns to engage with key US industry players will take place for the third year running. This annual event, organised by EIT Digital and Mind the Bridge, brings together EU policy makers and 15 of the fastest growing European scaleups to meet Silicon Valley stakeholders during a highly interactive week of local presentations and meetings. European scaleups can apply until 31 May.
