Maritime industries
Maritime sector has been and will continue to be of strategic importance for Europe, due to the nature of its economy, topology, history and tradition. Shipbuilding is a key maritime industry which has contributed significantly to Europe’s maritime past and which is strategic for its maritime future. It is also a considerable source of employment.
The performance of the EU marine supplies industry is a key to the competitiveness of European shipbuilding. It is therefore of strategic interest for European industrial policies to maintain a viable and dynamic marine supplies industry in Europe. To draw a new baseline, to better understand the conditions within the European marine supplies industry and to analyse its global position BALance Technology Consulting based in Germany has recently delivered a study named "Competitiveness and Benchmarking in the Field of Marine Equipment" to the European Commission.
A one-year study, funded by the European Commission, has investigated maritime Research and Technological Development (RTD) activities, throughout the European Union and in candidate countries. The study, which covered shipbuilding, including marine equipment, shipping and marine resources, has been undertaken by a consortium consisting of British Maritime Technology, Cliff Funnell Associates, the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics and Maritime Engineering and Technology for Transport Logistics and Education.
The existence and survival of local distributive trades, that is, the sale of consumer goods and services to the public in an area serving a limited number of customers, is of fundamental importance in many respects.
As the EU becomes more and more closely integrated, state aids granted by individual Member States to their national industries, may have an increasingly distortionary effect on the common market.
On a daily basis we make use of the services of retail enterprises. It is therefore easy to recognize that the sector forms a vital element in the European economy in the highly differentiated flow of products from producers to consumers. Retailing, including motor vehicle trade, employs over 15 million persons representing about 10% of total employment in the European Economic Area.
This publication completes the panorama of the structure and evolution of the distributive trades which was started with a series of publications on retailing.
This new edition is intended to provide a practical guide which will facilitate improvement of contractual relationships between main contractors and subcontractors, in particular when these relationships have transnational aspects.
This publication is a further step towards a genuine integrated statistical system on commerce.
This publication is the first compendium of statistical information on internal Trade at Community level since the enlargement of the European Union to fifteen Member States.
The aim of the Green Paper on Commerce is to stimulate considered discussion on the importance of this sector of the economy.
