Study on the extent of maritime RTD activities in Europe

A one-year study, funded by the European Commission, has investigated maritime Research and Technological Development (RTD) activities, throughout the European Union and in candidate countries. The study, which covered shipbuilding, including marine equipment, shipping and marine resources, has been undertaken by a consortium consisting of British Maritime Technology, Cliff Funnell Associates, the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics and Maritime Engineering and Technology for Transport Logistics and Education.

The aim of the study was to analyse the current state of maritime-related RTD activities and the programmes within the European Union (EU), to identify possibilities for improved co-operation among the various programmes and establishments, and propose specific actions to create more synergy between the EU and/or national programmes, in order to improve the competitiveness of the European maritime industries.

The study has developed a database of some 1,500 projects and programmes, with contact information for the funding organisations and contractors.

The study has identified a number of possibilities for greater synergy or co-operation in research efforts; for example, between the EC 5th Framework Programme and nationally-funded RTD, and between the maritime industries and other technology areas. Other recommendations include the creation of a Virtual Maritime Thematic Network.

In line with the recommendation of the report for greater dissemination of information about maritime RTD, the report itself, together with the database of projects and programmes, will be made accessible on the Internet.
