The Artificial Intelligence Act: A new era for AI regulation in the EU

On August 2024, the Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, commonly referred to as the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act, came into effect. The regulation provides a globally binding, comprehensive framework for the deployment and use of AI systems across the EU. Its main objectives are to ensure that AI systems are reliable, centred around human needs, and consistent with EU values. AI is being increasingly utilised in the tourism industry, enhancing aspects such as personalised travel recommendations, efficient customer service through chatbots, and optimising travel itineraries.

 
Strategic priorities for European tourism: EU Mandate 2024-2029

The European Tourism Manifesto alliance published in July 2024 a strategic vision for the European tourism industry for the 2024-2029 EU mandate. The document stresses the importance of tourism for the EU and highlights key priorities for the European tourism sector, focusing on four main areas: EU vision and strategy, decarbonisation, connectivity and borders, and innovation and adaptation. It aims to ensure that tourism continues to positively impact Europe’s economy and society while addressing challenges such as regulatory compliance, business adaptation, and environmental impact.

Analysis of SMEs’ participation in public procurement and the measures to support it

This study measures the success rates of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in public procurement and identifies policy initiatives to further support their participation. Although the study was conducted before the coronavirus crisis, it offers recommendations that can be especially useful in helping SMEs recover and build resilience in the aftermath of the crisis.

 
Compendium of large infrastructure projects

This study explores the public procurement aspects in contracts for large infrastructure projects, with an emphasis on the issues and trends that were emerging in the selection of procurement procedures within particular delivery models. Identifying these issues and trends opens up the opportunity to consider the timing and integration of the selected procurement model and procurement procedure into the overall delivery model for large infrastructure projects.

The European Observatory for Clusters and Industrial Change published valuable guidance for cluster policy-makers. It shows how to better monitor results and strategically evaluate policies and programmes set up to support the development of industrial clusters and the competitiveness of its firms.
