Study on competitiveness and benchmarking in the field of marine equipment

The performance of the EU marine supplies industry is a key to the competitiveness of European shipbuilding. It is therefore of strategic interest for European industrial policies to maintain a viable and dynamic marine supplies industry in Europe. To draw a new baseline, to better understand the conditions within the European marine supplies industry and to analyse its global position BALance Technology Consulting based in Germany has recently delivered a study named "Competitiveness and Benchmarking in the Field of Marine Equipment" to the European Commission.

[p]The study suggest to use benchmarking as an underlying methodology for continuous improvement measures to marine supplies industry. However, a pilot measure in the study showed that companies in the branch are hardly prepared to perform benchmarking exercises. Compared to other industries one reason can be seen in the fact that marine suppliers are not frequently challenged by their customers through audits covering also process quality.[/p] [p]The study discussed different aspects of advanced supply chain management. Chances for productivity improvements have been discussed by means of advanced IT solutions (eCommerce, EDI, Internet etc.). A great potential for business improvements has been identified, but the actual level of information technology applications for co-operative working in maritime supply chains is less advanced than in other industries. The study suggest that the consequent exploitation of the available technology will be beneficial for European shipyards and their suppliers. By building comprehensive and powerful co-operative networks supported by new technologies, this could lead to sustainable productivity improvements, which cannot easily be copied by competing regions.[/p] [p]The study concludes a catalogue of dedicated actions to be launched by the industry associations or the industry itself. The Commission is prepared to support initiatives of the industry in order to achieve better European harmonisation and to prepare the grounds for further strengthening the competitive position of the industry.[/p]
