According to the latest Climate Action Progress Report, the EU achieved a net 8% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 compared to the previous year. This marks the largest annual drop in decades, aside from the anomalous year 2020, when emissions fell due to restrictions enforced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The regulation sets binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems, particularly those with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural disasters.

Solar overtook hard coal as electricity source in 2022 (28/08/2024)

In 2022, hard coal for the first time was overtaken by solar energy in electricity generation in the EU. The proportion of solar energy in the EU’s total electricity production was 210 249 GWh compared with 205 693 GWh for hard coal.

1.5 million new battery-only electric cars in 2023 (28/08/2024)

In 2023, 1.5 million new battery-only electric passenger cars were registered in the EU, bringing the total number to 4.5 million. This represents a 48.5% increase compared with 2022 when the total number was 3.0 million.

In support of the European Green Deal, the European Commission has launched a new call for project proposals to support research and innovation under the EU Mission "Adaptation to Climate Change". The total indicative budget available is EUR 123.97 million. The deadline for submissions is 18 September 2024.

Technical Assistance for Member States with low effective participation under the Innovation Fund (28/08/2024)

EU emissions trading system – countries considered to apply CORSIA in 2024 (28/08/2024)

The Commission must adopt acts every year listing countries other than EU/EEA countries, Switzerland and the UK, which are considered to be applying CORSIA. This list for 2024 will be used to calculate the CORSIA offsetting required from airlines under the Directive. The feedback period ends on 24 September.

EU invests close to €3 billion of emissions trading revenues for cleaner energy systems in 10 EU countries via the Modernisation Fund (28/06/2024)

CO₂ emissions from new cars and vans continued to decrease in 2023 (28/06/2024)

According to provisional data, average CO2 emissions of new cars and vans registered in Europe decreased in 2023. These trends are the result of the increase in registrations of battery electric vehicles, which reached market shares of 15.5% for cars and 8% for vans.

Given that the new F-Gas Regulation includes additional and amended rules on registration requirements in the F-gas portal, it is necessary to repeal the current Implementing Regulation to ensure the portal’s correct functioning. The feedback period ends on 11 July 2024.

Emissions trading system (ETS) – permanent emissions storage through carbon capture and utilisation (28/06/2024)

This initiative, based on the revised ETS Directive, will set the conditions under which these GHG emissions can be considered as permanently chemically bound in a product. The feedback period ends on 16 July 2024.

The Directive implements the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation ('CORSIA') under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Article 12(8) requires the Commission to lay down detailed rules to calculate offsetting requirements under CORSIA for emissions up to 2026.

Heavy-duty vehicles – extending manufacturer reporting on CO2 emissions and fuel consumption (28/05/2024)

Under EU Regulation 2018/956, vehicle manufacturers are required to report on CO2 emissions from and fuel consumption of heavy-duty vehicles. Accelerated investment in renewables and energy efficiency key to 1.5°C target (30/01/2024)
