In her State of the Union address on 15 September 2021, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen outlined flagship initiatives which the Commission plans to undertake in the coming year.

Joint EU-US Press Release on the Global Methane Pledge (20/09/2021)

The European Union and the United States announced on 18 September the Global Methane Pledge, an initiative to reduce global methane emissions to be launched at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26) in November in Glasgow. President Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged countries at the US-led Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate (MEF) to join the Pledge and welcomed those that have already signaled their support.

The EU and Turkey discuss climate crisis and future cooperation (17/09/2021)

The European Commission’s Executive Vice President for the European Green Deal Frans Timmermans and Turkish Minister of Environment and Urbanisation Murat Kurum met in Brussels for a high-level dialogue on climate. Both the EU and Turkey have recently experienced extreme impacts of climate change, such as wildfires and floods; Turkey has also seen the largest ever outbreak of “sea snot” in the Marmara Sea – overgrowth of microscopic algae caused by water pollution and climate change.

Modernisation Fund: First EUR 304 million to support climate neutrality in 3 beneficiary countries (17/09/2021)

Following the positive disbursement decision by the European Commission, the European Investment Bank has made the first payments from the Modernisation Fund. A total of EUR 304.43 million has been made available to Czechia (EUR 202m), Hungary (EUR 11.43m) and Poland (EUR 91m) to finance six investment proposals that have been confirmed as priority investments.

The European Commission has published new technical guidance on climate-proofing of infrastructure projects for the period 2021-2027 (17/09/2021)

The guidance will help mainstream climate considerations in future investment and development of infrastructure projects from buildings, network infrastructure to a range of built systems and assets.

The guidance was published on 16 September in the Official Journal (OJ C 373).

“Our planet, our future”: discussing climate action with school students (22/09/2021)

If you teach students between 11 and 17 years old, explore the interactive site “Our planet, our future” to learn about the science of climate change, what's happening across the EU and how we can all do our bit to fight climate change. In addition, the Teacher’s Hub offers a selection of classroom activities and relevant materials to help you structure your classes and engage students with fun interactive exercises. On the move with the Climate Pact (17/09/2021)

In September and October, the Climate Pact is focusing on what we call ‘sustainable mobility’. This means using any form of transport with lower carbon emissions – from taking the train across the continent for your holiday to walking or biking to your local bakery. So why is mobility so important when it comes to climate change? And how can you be part of our sustainable mobility movement?

New European Bauhaus: new actions and funding to link sustainability to style and inclusion (22/09/2021)

On 15 September 2021 the Commission adopted a Communication that sets out the framework, core principles and key actions that will drive the New European Bauhaus forward, as it moves from co-design to delivery.

Conference on the Future of Europe: Citizens Panel on climate change, environment and health (01/10/2021)

The very first European Citizens' Panels of the Conference on the Future of Europe wrapped up this weekend! From September 2021 to January 2022, four panels, each comprising 200 citizens, will deliberate and make concrete recommendations on the future direction they want for Europe. The Citizens Panel on climate change, environment and health will hold its first session on 1-3 October. The plenary sessions of the Panels will be web streamed live on the Conference’s Multilingual Digital Platform. Video and audio recordings will also be made available afterwards.

"Towards a fairer, climate-neutral Europe for all" - 2021 European Covenant of Mayors Ceremony (07/10/2021)

The Covenant of Mayors Ceremony 2021 will be an opportunity to discuss a new chapter of the Covenant of Mayors initiative, with a new political commitment organised around four main topics: commit, engage, act and network. These topics will be reflected in a series of panels with key representatives of EU institutions and of European municipalities.The event will also showcase the richness of climate actions everywhere in Europe.

Carbon capture, utilisation and storage forum (11/10/2021)

The European Commission is pleased to announce the first high-level forum to engage and facilitate discussions on carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS). The forum is designed to involve all relevant stakeholders, representatives of the EU institutions and EU countries to facilitate deployment of CCUS technologies. The launch of the forum will take place in the presence of both Executive Vice president Frans Timmermans and Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson.

19th European Week of Regions and Cities (11/10/2021)

Under the heading "Together for recovery", this year programme is focused on the capacity of the EU and of national and regional governments to support European citizens and their local communities with practical measures and public policies aimed at investing in a fairer, greener and more digital future for recovery.

EU Sustainable Energy Week 2021 (25/10/2021)

The EU Sustainable Energy Week is the biggest European conference dedicated to renewables and efficient energy use in Europe. Once again, the Policy Conference will be organised in a digital format, under the theme ‘Towards 2030: Reshaping the European Energy System’. On Natura 2000 Day this year, the European Commission launched the 2022 edition of the Natura 2000 Award. The Award, now in its sixth edition, honours leading nature conservation achievements in Europe’s Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The Award aims to raise awareness about Natura 2000, the work carried out by different actors to safeguard the network’s vital natural assets, as well as the health, cultural, societal and economic benefits that the network provides to us all. Commission launches a video competition for schools: “Film4Energy Challenge” (17/09/2021)

On 1 October, the European Commission is launching the “Film4Energy Challenge”, a video competition that invites schools across the European Union (EU) to create a short film about the importance of saving energy. Open to 12-15-year-old schoolchildren across the EU, the competition is not only aimed at stimulating creativity, but also a deeper consideration of the importance of saving energy in the fight against climate change.

Delivering the European Green Deal (14/07/2021)

The European Commission has adopted a package of proposals to make the EU's climate, energy, land use, transport and taxation policies fit for reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030. Achieving these emission reductions in the next decade is crucial to Europe becoming the world's first climate-neutral continent by 2050 and making the European Green Deal a reality. With these proposals, the Commission is presenting the tools to deliver on the targets agreed in the European Climate Law and transform our economy and society for a fair, green and prosperous future.

European Green Deal: Commission proposes new strategy to protect and restore EU forests (19/07/2021)

The European Commission has adopted the New EU Forest Strategy for 2030, a flagship initiative of the European Green Deal that builds on the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. The Strategy sets a vision and concrete actions for increasing the quantity and quality of forests in the EU and strengthening their protection, restoration and resilience. By addressing social, economic and environmental aspects all together, the Forest Strategy aims to ensure the multi-functionality of EU forests and highlights the pivotal role played by foresters. It is accompanied by a Roadmap for planting three billion additional trees across Europe by 2030 in full respect of ecological principles – the right tree in the right place for the right purpose.

Eurobarometer Survey: Europeans consider climate change to be the most serious problem facing the world (05/07/2021)

In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, Europeans remain very concerned about climate change and support action across the EU to tackle it, according to the latest Eurobarometer survey by the European Commission. European citizens now identify climate change as the single most serious problem facing the world. Read more about the survey and the results in your country.

EU invests €122 million in innovative projects to decarbonise the economy (27/07/2021)

For the first time since the creation of the Innovation Fund, the European Union is investing €118 million into 32 small innovative projects located in 14 EU Member States, Iceland and Norway. The grants will support projects aiming to bring low-carbon technologies to the market in energy intensive industries, hydrogen, energy storage and renewable energy. In addition to these grants, 15 projects located in 10 EU Member States and Norway will benefit from project development assistance worth up to €4.4 million, with the aim of advancing their maturity.

Innovation Fund: Commission announces planning of the next calls for proposals (08/07/2021)

Preparations for the next calls for proposals under the Innovation Fund are well underway. As announced at the Innovation Fund Expert Group meeting on 6 July, the Commission plans to launch the second call for large-scale projects on 26 October, while the second call for small-scale projects is expected to be launched in March 2022.

Average CO2 emissions from new passenger cars registered in Europe decreased by 12% in 2020 and the share of electric cars tripled as new targets started applying (29/06/2021)

According to provisional monitoring data published by the European Environment Agency, the average CO2 emissions of new cars registered in the EU, Iceland, Norway and the UK in 2020 have decreased strongly compared to 2019, as manufacturers were stepping up their efforts to raise the share of electric vehicles in their fleets.

The EU and Morocco form a Green Partnership on energy, climate and the environment ahead of COP 26 (29/06/2021)

The European Union and the Kingdom of Morocco on 28 June announced their intention to establish a Green Partnership. The partners aim to strengthen their cooperation in the fight against climate change, and to work together on advancing their energy transition, protecting the environment and boosting the green economy. The first results of this work are to be presented at COP 26 in November.

Average CO2 emissions from new cars increased in 2019 ahead of stricter 2020 targets (25/06/2021)

The average CO2 emissions of new cars and vans registered in the EU, Iceland, Norway and the United Kingdom in 2019 stayed well below the applicable targets, according to final data published by the European Environment Agency. However, average CO 2 emissions of new passenger cars in 2019 increased for the third consecutive year, while emissions from new vans remained stable. This left manufacturers with the significant challenge of reducing the average emissions of their fleet in 2020 when stricter targets were introduced.

LIFE programme: EU honours inspirational projects supporting nature, environment and climate action (25/06/2021)

At the EU Green Week , Europe’s biggest environmental event, the winners of the 2021 LIFE Awards were announced by the EU’s LIFE programme . This years’ Awards honoured winners in three different categories from the Slovak Republic (Nature), Spain (Environment), and France (Climate Action). The public also voted for their favourite project in the Citizen’s Award, and the work and dedication of young volunteers were recognised in the LIFE4Youth Award.

LIFE PlanUp final conference (28/06/2021)

On 12 May, the European Commission adopted the EU Action Plan: “Towards Zero Pollution for Air, Water and Soil” – a key deliverable of the European Green Deal. On 27 April, the European Commission published the final report of a two-year study on how to set up and implement carbon farming in the EU. Climate Action: EU submits new greenhouse gas emissions reduction target to UNFCCC (19/01/2021)

Following the European Council's endorsement of a new and more ambitious target to reduce the EU's greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 from 1990 levels, the EU and its 27 Member States have formally submitted this target as their new nationally determined contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement.

2021 EU ETS auction calendars published (19/01/2021)

The European Energy Exchange (EEX) has published the 2021 EU ETS auction calendars. The auctions will start on 29 January 2021 with an auction by Germany. The auctions on the common auction platform will start on 1 February 2021 and will also include the volumes for the Innovation Fund and the Modernisation Fund. The first 2021 auction by Poland will take place on 3 February 2021.

EU greenhouse gas emissions fell in 2019 to the lowest level in three decades (08/12/2020)

The Commission has adopted its annual EU Climate Action Progress Report, covering the EU's progress in cutting greenhouse gas emissions in 2019. Greenhouse gas emissions in the EU-27 decreased by 3.7 % year-on-year, while GDP grew by 1.5%. Emissions have now been reduced by 24% compared to 1990 levels.

Second Innovation Fund call for projects: Commission to invest €100 million in innovative small-scale clean technologies (14/12/2020)

The European Commission has launched the second call for projects under the Innovation Fund, one of the world’s largest funding programmes for the deployment of innovative low-carbon technologies. The new call makes available grant funding of €100 million for small-scale projects, with a capital expenditure between €2.5 and 7.5 million, in renewable energy, energy-intensive industries, including substitute products, energy storage, and carbon capture, use and storage.

The European Commission requested that the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) conduct an updated analysis of the non-CO2 effects of aviation on climate change to fulfil the requirement of the EU Emissions Trading System Directive (Art. 30.4).

The European Commission has presented its 'Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy’ together with an Action Plan of 82 initiatives that will guide our work for the next four years. This strategy lays the foundation for how the EU transport system can achieve its green and digital transformation and become more resilient to future crises. As outlined in the European Green Deal, the result will be a 90% cut in emissions by 2050, delivered by a smart, competitive, safe, accessible and affordable transport system.

The European Commission proposes to modernise EU legislation on batteries, delivering its first initiative among the actions announced in the new Circular Economy Action Plan.
