Last month, in a nutshell

Welcome to the April issue of our newsletter! Here are the latest EU climate news highlights.

Last month started with good news: thanks to the progressive decarbonisation of the European power sector, emissions covered under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) experienced a record annual decrease of 15.5% in 2023. At the same time, EU ETS revenues are being used to accelerate Europe’s green transition. In April, some €720 million were awarded to support seven European renewable hydrogen projects, while other 337 clean tech projects applied for funding.

The 2023 European State of the Climate (ESOTC) report and the 2023 Advance report on Forest Fires, both published last month, sounded a warning bell for more urgent climate action. This is why the EU continues to mobilise substantial resources to decarbonise our industries, support the deployment of renewable energy and foster sustainable mobility, as well as better anticipate and manage climate risks.

Finally, April marked another milestone for the European Green Deal with the adoption of the strengthened Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, which sets a framework to reduce emissions and energy use in buildings across the EU.

What's new?

Record reduction of 2023 ETS emissions due largely to boost in renewable energy

Last year’s emissions under the EU’s Emission Trading System (ETS) show the most significant annual emissions reductions since the ETS was launched in 2005. The main driver is the power sector’s significant progress in decarbonisation.
