Last month, in a nutshell
|
|
Welcome to the January issue of our newsletter! Here are the latest EU climate news highlights.
As Belgium took over the Presidency of the Council of the EU at the beginning of the new year, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met to outline the common work strands of the two institutions for the next six months, with climate action being one of the key pillars.
2024 began with two major interinstitutional agreements that will propel the EU forward on its path to climate neutrality by mid-century. The first one strengthened CO2 emissions standards for new heavy-duty vehicles entering the EU market from 2030, while the second established stricter rules on the use of fluorinated gases and ozone-depleting substances across our continent.
To foster the transition of the EU economy towards climate-neutrality, the European Commission has also recently approved multi-billion-euro state aid schemes aimed at supporting the greening of the industrial sectors in France, Germany, and Italy.
Best wishes to our readers for a prosperous year ahead!
