Celebrating 20 years of the ‘European Statistics Code of Practice’

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the European Statistics Code of Practice, which was adopted by Eurostat and the National Statistical Institutes of the European Statistical System on 25 February 2005. The adoption marked a pivotal step in ensuring high-quality, reliable, and transparent European statistics. On 25 May 2005, the European Commission recognised the Code of Practice as a common set of standards at the European level and recommended that Member States recognise and ensure that its principles are respected.
The Code of Practice consists of 16 principles and 84 indicators that set the standards for developing, producing, and disseminating European statistics, covering the institutional environment, statistical processes, and statistical outputs. All national statistical authorities that produce European statistics commit to adhering to these principles. Compliance with the Code of Practice is regularly monitored through peer review exercises.
A dedicated high-level event will take place on 6 and 7 November this year to celebrate and promote the Code of Practice and its achievements. It will also provide an opportunity to look ahead and reflect on the future role of the Code of Practice in further strengthening trust in European statistics and in enhancing their quality.
Over the past 20 years, the Code of Practice has been updated twice to reflect evolving statistical needs, technological advancements, and growing expectations for data integrity.
significantly strengthened the integrity, independence, and quality of European statistics. However, as the world of data continues to evolve, it must remain adaptable and forward-looking.
The future of European statistics depends on continuous innovation, unwavering independence, and a commitment to transparency. As we look ahead, the European Statistics Code of Practice will continue to be a cornerstone for trustworthy and high-quality statistics, supporting evidence-based policymaking and informed public debate across Europe.
