Additional data
Energy commodities (fuels) are bought mainly for their heating properties. They can also be converted into different products (derived fuels). Therefore, it is useful to present the energy supply and energy consumption in comparable energy units, such as terajoules or tons of oil equivalent. The format adopted is termed the energy balance.
The energy balances show the relative importance of different fuels to the economy. The energy balance is also the starting point for the construction of various indicators as well as analyses of energy efficiency.
The energy balance sheets are currently published in the interactive tool Energy balances. For your convenience, the data are also available in Excel format:
The SHARES tool focuses on the harmonised calculation of the share of energy from renewable sources. The main benefit of the SHARES tool is that EU countries are committed to following the same method to calculate the indicators related to the share of energy from renewable sources. Using this tool prevents irregularities that may arise from varying parameters and rules used in different calculation methods.
Data are available in the database folder Share of energy from renewable sources. Information can also be found in our article on Renewable energy statistics.
The collection of data on combined heat and power generation (CHP data) is defined in EU directive 2012/27 on energy efficiency and the implementation guidelines are defined in EU decision 2008/952.
Eurostat provides data in Excel format on combined heat and power (CHP) for the period 2005-2019 and on capacity data according to type of generation expressed in megawatts (MW) for the year 2015.
Eurostat uses cumulated monthly energy statistics to produce early estimates for CO2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels:
