On 19 January, more than 150 participants came together for a Blockathon Forum to discuss the establishment of a new ecosystem for ensuring product authenticity.

This initiative, designed by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) with a focus on the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure – European Product and Logistic Service Authenticator (EBSI-ELSA), aims to guarantee the authenticity of products by facilitating the secure exchange of information among participants in the supply chain. The proposed ecosystem leverages blockchain technology to establish a common stake and immutable bond among all parties.

The event on 19 January commenced with some supportive words from the EU Belgium Presidency and featured two additional representatives from the European Commission: Joachim Schwerin (DG GROW), who delivered a presentation on blockchain in EU policy and programmes, and José Manuel Panizo Plaza (DIGIT), who provided insights into the latest developments within the EBSI project.

Following these contributions, Nicolas Hauw presented an exhaustive cost-benefit model aimed at onboarding brand owners into the EBSI-ELSA initiative, and Jeronimo Vicente Miralles outlined the technical functionalities of the project.

The project is looking forward to some important upcoming milestones, starting with a call for interest for IP rights holders to collaborate with EBSI-ELSA. Selected holders will join one of five pilot programmes within a live environment in the supply and distribution chain.
