Sleeping Beauty music venue wakes up Nijmegen’s Central Station area

Nijmegen’s iconic music venue Doornroosje — named for Sleeping Beauty, in Dutch — has relocated to purpose-built new premises. Located near the city’s central railway station, this innovative landmark construction is also a home from home for hundreds of students and supports the city’s commuters with ample indoor bicycle parking. It is a striking example of the ability of clever design to serve a number of potentially conflicting needs, setting the tone for the ongoing redevelopment of the area.

Cross-border project improves health in Poland and Russia

By promoting cooperation between the regions of Warmińsko-Mazurskie in Poland and Kaliningrad in Russia, the ‘Health is the most important thing’ project aimed to encourage healthy lifestyles and increase access to health services in rural areas and small towns around Kętrzyn, on the Polish side of the border, and Ozyorsk, on the Russian side. Actions included an illness prevention campaign, medical examinations, and the renovation and purchasing of equipment for rural medical centres.

Construction eases traffic flows on Czech Republic’s D35 motorway

EU financing has supported construction of a new section of the Czech Republic’s D35 motorway between the villages of Opatovice, Časy and Ostrov in the Pardubice region. The first phase of the project entails building a grade-separated junction at Opatovice. Grade separation refers to the alignment of the roads at different heights so that they do not disrupt traffic flows where they cross.

Supporting Scotland’s sports entrepreneurs and small businesses

A project based in Stirling, Scotland helped SMEs involved in the sport sector tap into the knowledge and expertise of academics and researchers in order to bring new products or services to market. The Sporting Chance Initiative (SCI) provided a range of services including grants for collaborative research, market research intelligence, business advice and the hosting of events and workshops. By the end of its lifespan, the project had supported more than 500 SMEs and assisted in the development of 48 new products or processes.
