Science for Democracy

The ‘Science for Democracy’ campaign aims to explore the diverse ways in which EU-funded research fosters citizen participation. Several Horizon Europe-Cluster 2 projects support the campaign, addressing various forms of citizen engagement, such as tackling inequalities and exploring the role of digital media.

 
Call Opening ‘A European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage’

€48 million are available under Horizon Europe to support digital infrastructure that will connect cultural heritage institutions and professionals across the EU. The European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage call will develop specific digital collaborative tools for the sector while removing barriers for smaller and remote institutions. Science for Democracy: how research can help us to understand and nurture our democracies

Research has the power to strengthen democratic values. In the lead-up to the European Elections, the European Research Executive Agency launched a ‘Science for Democracy’ campaign, which aims to explore the multifaceted ways EU-funded projects such as COALESCE, CROPS and ScienceUS nurture various citizen participation. The campaign also features a beneficiary of Horizon Europe who is researching disinformation and post-truth politics.

 
New Gender Equality Champions in research and innovation announced

The Gender Equality Champions acknowledge outstanding results achieved by academic and research institutions in gender equality. This year’s winners were announced on 15 May. The Centre national de la recherche scientifique (France) and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Spain) are the new Sustainable Gender Equality Champions, while the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (Ireland) becomes the Newcomer Gender Equality Champion.

 
EU TalentOn: Empowering Young Researchers. Call for applicants closed!

EU TalentOn is a competition initiated, funded, and co-created by the European Commission for young researchers representing all disciplines of science, aged between 21 and 35. The 2024 call for applicants closed on 20 May. Now a group of experts will select at least 100 participants who will have to acquaint themselves and work together in engaging workshops during the summer. In September, the finalists will gather in Katowice, Poland, for a final hackaton. The winning teams will receive prizes that go from €3,000 to €12,000.

A Horizon Europe Info Day took place on 22 April to inform interested applicants about the new European Research Area (ERA) call HORIZON-WIDERA-2024-ERA-02, just open. If you could not attend the Info Day, you can now watch the recordings to learn more about the WIDERA Work Programme 2023-2025, the budget of the current open call, timeline, and details about the three topics open for funding.

 
Find partners to apply for the ERA call

If you are applying for the second 2024 ERA call, don’t miss the Knowledge and Brokerage event on 17 June. In the first part of the event, you will learn about the latest ERA call topics open for funding, and the proposals’ evaluation process. In the second part, you will be able to meet potential partners and build or join research teams to apply together for EU funding. Registration is open!

 
New ERA call for proposal is open. Apply by 25 September

This is the second European Research Area (ERA) call for proposal opening this year. Horizon Europe makes €28 million available for EU funding to support projects on three different topics: ‘Experimentation and exchange of good practices for value creation’, ‘Science comes to town’, and ‘Talent ecosystems for attractive early research careers’. Deadline to submit proposals is 25 September.

 
EU Prize for Citizen Science: Join the announcement of the winners!

On 12 June, the EU Prize for Citizen Science will award outstanding citizen science initiatives for their impact advancing a pluralistic, inclusive and sustainable society in Europe. Join online for the announcement of the winners in a event hosted by the European Research Executive Agency and IMPETUS, the EU project managing the Prize. There will be one winner in each of the three categories, receiving between €20,000 and €60,000.
