The calls include 75 new topics in the areas of sustainable food systems, nature-based solutions and biodiversity, and the sustainable development of rural, coastal and urban areas, among others. Back in September the award ceremony for the EU Prize for Citizen Science took place within the Ars Electronica Festival, in Linz, Austria. The Citizen Science Award, announced for the first time in 2023, was initiated by the REA-managed IMPETUS project.
This year’s edition hosted 136 young scientists aged 14 to 20 from 36 countries. They presented 85 scientific projects to the general public as part of an international science fair organised by the European Commission. The first prize was secured by scientist from Poland, Canada, Denmark and Portugal.
The “Reforming and enhancing the EU research and innovation system” funding opportunity will open its application period on 6 December 2023. Submitting proposals will be possible until 12 March 2024. The call has an indicative budget of 25,5 million, covering 10 topics, including researchers’ skills, intellectual property and open access publishing.

The EU-funded project VIRTIGATION has launched a social media series of posts to show the project and its partners work in protecting tomatoes and cucurbits from viruses. The project features, for example, the technology they use to tackle devastating plant viruses, the process of seed multiplication and a state-of-the-art quarantine laboratory for plant pathogens and insect pests.
The 2023 Mission Soil call received 123 proposals. The topics to establish the Living Labs, places where to experiment on the ground, received almost half of the proposals. 16 projects are expected to be funded with the €126 million EU funding available. The evaluations by independent experts are starting. The successful projects are expected to be informed in December.
The Water4All - Partnership, also co-funded by the EU, is looking for research and innovation projects focusing on aquatic ecosystems, including inland surface water, groundwater, transitional and coastal water. The projects should have water security on top of the objectives. There is approximately €36 million of budget available for funding. Deadline to submit pre-proposals is 13 November.
The European Biodiversity Partnership (Biodiversa+), co-founded by the EU, is looking for projects on Nature-based solutions for biodiversity, human well-being and just transformative change. The project proposals can focus on terrestrial, marine, coastal and freshwater. Approximately €40 million is available in funding to support research on biodiversity. Applicants should submit their pre-proposal by 10 November.

Cluster 6 ‘Food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture and environment’ 2024 calls for proposals for EU funding will open on 17 October. An Info Day was organised on 27-28 September for applicants to learn about the topics open for funding. If you could not attend the event, you can watch the recording.
The European Commission will invest €90 million in 17 new research projects that will contribute to the EU Mission: ‘A Soil Deal for Europe'. The projects were selected by independent experts and gather 314 participants from 32 countries to deliver a wide variety of benefits for the restoration and protection of soil by 2030. Most of them have already started their research.
