EU TalentOn: Empowering Young Researchers. Call for applicants closed!

EU TalentOn is a competition initiated, funded, and co-created by the European Commission for young researchers representing all disciplines of science, aged between 21 and 35. The 2024 call for applicants closed on 20 May. Now a group of experts will select at least 100 participants who will have to acquaint themselves and work together in engaging workshops during the summer. In September, the finalists will gather in Katowice, Poland, for a final hackaton. The winning teams will receive prizes that go from €3,000 to €12,000.

A Horizon Europe Info Day took place on 22 April to inform interested applicants about the new European Research Area (ERA) call HORIZON-WIDERA-2024-ERA-02, just open. If you could not attend the Info Day, you can now watch the recordings to learn more about the WIDERA Work Programme 2023-2025, the budget of the current open call, timeline, and details about the three topics open for funding.

 
Find partners to apply for the ERA call

If you are applying for the second 2024 ERA call, don’t miss the Knowledge and Brokerage event on 17 June. In the first part of the event, you will learn about the latest ERA call topics open for funding, and the proposals’ evaluation process. In the second part, you will be able to meet potential partners and build or join research teams to apply together for EU funding. Registration is open!

 
New ERA call for proposal is open. Apply by 25 September

This is the second European Research Area (ERA) call for proposal opening this year. Horizon Europe makes €28 million available for EU funding to support projects on three different topics: ‘Experimentation and exchange of good practices for value creation’, ‘Science comes to town’, and ‘Talent ecosystems for attractive early research careers’. Deadline to submit proposals is 25 September.

 
EU Prize for Citizen Science: Join the announcement of the winners!

On 12 June, the EU Prize for Citizen Science will award outstanding citizen science initiatives for their impact advancing a pluralistic, inclusive and sustainable society in Europe. Join online for the announcement of the winners in a event hosted by the European Research Executive Agency and IMPETUS, the EU project managing the Prize. There will be one winner in each of the three categories, receiving between €20,000 and €60,000.

Celebrating 20 years of the 2004 EU Enlargement

The 20th anniversary of the EU's 2004 enlargement is an occasion to celebrate a new era. It opened doors for a generation of EU researchers to collaborate across borders and advancing the frontiers of science. Based in Estonia, the SilentBorder project tackles the growing problem of counterfeit and pirated products crossing borders.

 
EITHOS at the EU Open Day

To celebrate Europe Day, the EU Institutions opened their doors to the public on 4 May, offering a day full of events and activities. In Berlaymont’s ‘Democracy Village’, the EU-funded EITHOS project showcased its novel Identity Theft Observatory System, aimed at raising public awareness about online identity theft and its associated risks and societal impact.

 
Science for Democracy!

In the lead-up to the European Elections, REA launched a ‘Science for Democracy’ campaign, which aims to explore the multifaceted ways EU-funded research nurtures citizen participation. Two notable projects in this campaign are VIGILANT and FERMI. Both projects are supporting law enforcement agencies in the fight against disinformation campaigns, including those that target free and fair elections.

The EU-funded project SEREN5, in cooperation with the European Commission’s Directorate for Migration and Home Affairs and the European Research Executive Agency (REA), has organised a two-day info event for potential beneficiaries of the 2024 Horizon Europe calls for proposals.

European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, visits Faroe Islands

Faroe Islands entities can lead projects funded under Horizon Europe Widening actions. To strengthen the EU's relationship with the Faroe Islands, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, visited the country on 14 March 2024 and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Faroese Prime Minister Aksel V. Johannesen.

 
EU projects contributing to the EU missions

Meet InnoRenew, one of the finalists of the New European Bauhaus Prizes 2024

The EU-funded InnoRenew Centre of Excellence is a scientific and industrial hub dedicated to sustainable construction using renewable materials. This year, the project was a New European Bauhaus (NEB) Prizes finalist. Alongside Commissioner Iliana Ivanova, the project's coordinator, Andreja Kutnar, introduced the NEB Academy.

Pathways to synergies: new projects bridging the gap between local and EU funding

The Pathways to synergies pilot call for proposals closed on 28 September 2023. It received 33 eligible proposals, of which 16 were selected for funding. Some projects already signed their Grant Agreements, with the rest of the signatures following in May 2024. The successful applicants aim to start their activity by the end of this year.

 
Great interest in funding opportunities under Horizon Europe Widening actions

397 project proposals were submitted under the Excellence Hubs, ERA Chairs and Teaming (2nd Stage) calls for proposals. The total budget requested reached over €1.9 billion. For all three calls evaluation results are to be communicated in September 2024, with Grant Agreement signature foreseen for November 2024.
