Dos and Don’ts when applying for Horizon Europe funding

Applying for Horizon Europe funding can be overwhelming. That is why we have compiled a list of dos and don’ts to follow when drafting and submitting your proposal: DO read the work programmes carefully but DON’T rush, take your time! Read our comprehensive list to help boost your chances of acquiring Horizon Europe funding and transforming your research.

 
An additional €50 million made available for EU security research

The Work Programme for Civil Security for Society – which outlines budget, topics, and goals for Horizon Europe security research for 2023 and 2024 – was amended by the European Commission in April. This means €50 million more for EU security research, helping strengthen Europe’s resilience and crisis preparedness.

 
World Bee Day: The EU-funded projects helping to protect bees

On 20 May we celebrated World Bee Day by highlighting the importance of pollinators across Europe. A number of EU-funded and REA managed projects contribute to their survival by fighting bee diseases (NO PROBLeMS), actively supporting healthy and sustainable beekeeping (PoshBee, B-GOOD) and improving pollination and honey production through AI technologies (Beewise).

 
Innovative research for sustainable fertiliser production and nutrient management

EU-funded research and innovation is accelerating Europe’s transition towards sustainable, resilient, circular and competitive farming systems. EU research projects are looking at how to produce fertilisers from alternative sources, such as digestate (the NOMAD project), and wastewater from slaughterhouses (Water2REturn) and farms (PSust-MOF). In addition, the need to understand and manage nutrient cycles and soil health is addressed by Circular Agronomics, Nutri2Cycle and NitroFixSal, while SolACE investigates new crop varieties.

 
EU research supports the European Year of Skills

This year is about empowering people with the necessary skills to build a greener and a healthier Europe. Projects like CENTRINNO, DESIRA, HEREWEAR and RURALIZATION are empowering communities with key skills needed for the circular economy, sustainable agriculture, forestry, and fashion. The aim is to help Digital and Green Transitions materialise in EU cities and rural areas.

 
EuroGEO workshop 2023. Registration is open!

EuroGEO supports the co-design of Earth Observation-based tools, knowledge and policies. The EuroGEO workshop invites scientists, policy makers and users to discuss how to link national, European and global perspectives on pollution and biodiversity crises together. The workshop will take place in Bolzano, Italy, on 2-4 October. Register now!

 
ANTARES Centre of Excellence for Advanced Technologies in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security

The Teaming for Excellence ANTARES project boosts research excellence at the BioSense Institute in Serbia. Its aim is to stimulate entrepreneurship and employment at regional level and secure enough safe food for the growing global population. Research and technological development is performed at global standards in term of scientific excellence, technological innovation and the contribution to broader social goals. The BioSense Institute also received grants for DRAGON, an agricultural big data project helping to fine tune key technological skills and NANOFACTS, a project that helped promote cancer research with leading European institutions. The BioSense Institute was visited by European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel, prior to receiving the institutional mandate to form a government.

 
Studying the role of fatty acid metabolism in neurological disorders

Discover how the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis (LIOS) benefitted from Widening funding to lead the FAT4BRAIN project with the aim of establishing a network of excellence focused on the pivotal role of fatty acid metabolism in the development of neurological disorders, a topic of highest biomedical and societal concern.

 
Visit to InnoRenew Centre of Excellence in Slovenia

European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel, prior to receiving the institutional mandate to form a government, visited InnoRenew in Slovenia. A flagship project of Widening funding, InnoRenew offers unique trainings to improve skills from bio-based materials to inclusive design and innovations. It promotes research and innovation deriving from traditional knowledge and skills related to wood and wood-compatible natural materials and seeks to increase added value and export of companies by 15% by 2023. This project is financed by a Widening Teaming call, find out more about the project.

 
Results of the European Research Area Talents call are out!

Nine ERA Talents projects are funded with a total of EUR 23.8 million. Grant agreements will be signed by May and projects will start their activities between June and September 2023. ERA Talents action aims to boost interoperability of careers and employability of research and innovation talents across sectors, with a centre of gravity in widening countries. It focuses on cross-sectoral talent circulation and academia-business collaboration for knowledge transfer across Europe.

 
Evaluations ongoing for Teaming for Excellence and European Excellence Initiatives 2023

With EUR 174 million available, the Teaming for Excellence Call (stage 1) received 125 proposals and will support around 18 projects. Selected proposals will be contacted by the end of July 2023. The European Excellence initiative has a budget of EUR 54 million, received 61 proposals and will fund around 20 projects. Selected proposals will be contacted by mid July 2023.

 
Teaming for Excellence and Excellence Hubs Calls 2022 Results are out!

The European Commission selected 25 proposals worth EUR 235 million that applied to Horizon Europe calls for Widening participation Teaming for Excellence and Excellence Hubs actions. The projects start their activities in 2023 and will work in supporting Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis, climate-resilient agriculture, artificial intelligence, gene therapy and much more!

 
Report just published on ERA chair dynamics in the Widening Programme

The European Research Area (ERA) Chair Dynamics in the Widening Programme report aims at capturing the geographical distribution of ERA Chair projects throughout the different Horizon 2020 (2014-2020) and Horizon Europe 2022 Calls, by analysing the flows of the ERA Chair holders from their origin to destination. The report focuses on topics, such as the trends of returning nationals in the ERA Chair holder flows, gender aspects, origin of holders from non-associated Third Countries and the overall picture of career mobility within the scheme of the ERA Chair Action.

 
Hop-on facility call for proposals is now open!

Submit your applications to the Hop-on facility call for proposals by 28 September 2023. The programme allows research institutions from Widening countries to join ongoing research and innovation actions under Horizon Europe Pillar 2 (Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness) and the European Innovation Council Pathfinder.

The Dissemination & Exploitation Support Facility call is open for submission until 28 September 2023.

 
EUR 20 million available for Pathways to synergies Call for proposals!

Pathways to synergies call for proposals is now open. This new Widening funding opportunity aims to unlock synergies between Horizon Europe/Horizon 2020, and ERDF, IPA (instrument for pre-accession assistance), RRF, INTERREG or similar funding instruments, strengthen innovation capacity and competitiveness of less performing regions and accelerate knowledge transfers and technological innovations. Deadline for applications is 28 September 2023.
